Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?Alternating storylike narratives with two pages of brief factual paragraphs, this introduction to life in the littoral range does not provide much solid information. For example, the term "carnivore" is used to refer to seals, and although their diet is described, the term is not defined and there is no glossary. When words are defined, nonstandard language is often used, e.g., mammals have "born-alive babies." There is an unevenness in the language throughout (the hermit crab keeps her eggs in her "mobile home" contrasted with a description later of her "too tight exoskeleton"), making a determination of appropriate reading level difficult. Pretty, colorful illustrations appear on every page. However, the endpapers contain confusing dotted line designations of territory required by some of the animals and delineation of such coastal zones as low and high tide, tidal lagoon, rock pools, etc. Yet, the section on the raccoon uses the term "strandline," which is not defined and does not appear on the endpaper. The uneven quality and fictionalization make this a marginal purchase.?Frances E. Millhouser, Chantilly Regional Library, VA

Review

"'Tide's in!' Who is eating? Who is hiding? What danger awaits? Along the Seashore lets us experience life with mammals, birds, and other sea creatures of the Pacific coast. Read about courtship rituals, baby raising tactics, house movings, a critter who will eat anything. . . . See a raccoon get caught by his dinner. Find out why seals are always crying. 'Educating in an entertaining manner' could be Ann Cooper's and Dorothy Emerling's motto." -- SM Ford. Small Press Nov/Dec 1997

"The most common wildlife found along the North American Pacific shoreline is the subject of this charming book. Fun 'treasure maps' and questions enhance the reading experience." -- The Bloomsbury Review July/Aug 1997

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning in a story format, August 24, 2000

This review is from: Along the Seashore (Wild Wonders Series) (Paperback)
My children (4 & 5) enjoyed reading a section of this book each day. Each animal is introduced through a brief story which captivates their hearts and minds. Following the story are various facts which provide a springboard for conversation and further reading. It can be read again and again. Since the selected animals are ones you may encounter on a beach trip, they can observe what they have read about.
