Format: Audio CD
This lovely recording brings us some of the finest works of the Spanish late renaissance composer Alonso Lobo, namely two parody Masses and the superb Lamentations of Jeremiah. The first work, Missa Simile est regnum caelorum, is based on a beautiful motet of that name by eminent composer of the previous generation Francisco Guerrero. Lobo's Mass is an equally lovely work, a masterpiece in the best traditions of Spanish music of the period and a fine example of the parody Mass genre. It boasts a superbly declamatory Credo, a jaunty, joyful Hosanna and an especially beautiful 5-part Agnus Dei.

The work receives a very fine performance here by the Choir of King's College, London, directed by David Trendell. The choir sing with around 6 voices per part, rather more numerous than we have become used to in early-music performances these days. Personally, I could have done with smaller numbers here for the sake of contrapuntal clarity, but nevertheless the youthful voices of the choral scholars produce a highly attractive, well-balanced sound, and they turn in polished, spirited perfomances under Trendell's stylish and committed direction. The following Lamentationes are an absolutely beautiful, intensely profound and expressive work, and here the choir and director are at their very best; this is quite simply a masterpiece of Spanish sacred polyphony.

These are followed by a second parody Mass, Lobo's Missa O Rex gloriae, based on a motet of that name by Palestrina, and this again receives a fine performance. There are a couple more of Lobo's motets included, the last of which is the uplifting and delightful "Ego flos campi" on a text from the Song of Songs.
