This review is from: Alpe d'Huez: The Legend (Paperback)
If you want a photo album, then this collection of photos provides a nice history of Alpe d'Huez's place in Tour de France history. I enjoyed browsing the book, but I was disappointed by the fact that much of the text is taken from journalist columns over the years which didn't provide me with the depth I was expecting for such an important mountain stage. The book also does not present material in a consistent chronological order; it basically starts with the first stage and ends with Lance, but it jumps around in the middle. To earn more stars, it needs to include more information about the region and the culture, as well as provide better profiles of the important cyclists rather than just citing scrapbook clippings. In all fairness to the author, I think the book did try to strike a balance between different angles and the highlights of Alpe d'Huez have been captured. As a cycling enthusiast, I can't help but want more of something that has become an icon in cycling.
