Healthy cereal and tastes great.

I love this cereal and it costs -- when I can find it -- almost twice at much at my local grocery.

Let me get this out of the way: Amazon shipped this to me quick and did a great job so this review is not their fault.

I grew up in the UK and still have family that lives there that will send over Alpen Original whenever they can. I had no idea until last week that you could even purchase Alpen in the US.

I read the reviews and everyone says "this is great - just like I remembered". Perhaps these people are used to the Canadian/North American version of this but let me assure you that this is NOT like the UK.

This version is more like rasin bran + muesli. It has bran flakes and a different consistency. It's not bad per se but just not at all what I expected. The UK version is closer to oatmeal and muesli together. This version doesn't soak up the milk quite the same but it does stay crunchier.

Perhaps its always been this way but I won't be ordering this version anymore and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for the UK version.

I totally agree with Jeremy Lynnes. This is not the Alpen I grew up with in Scotland, nor is it the same Alpen the Brits are currently eating across the pond. As my cousin so aptly put it, "it tastes like horse food"-meaning it mostly tastes like raw oats. This Canadian version doesn't have much flavor to it at all, and since I stopped eating it, my husband (who likes everything) noted that it seems like all the sugar falls to the bottom of the box, so most of it isn't very sweet, then the last bowlful is too sweet.

If you don't have the original to compare it to, its not very good; comparing it to the original...its very bad. I LOVE Alpen in the UK and brought a box back with me last summer, but this is nothing close...so sad.

Note to Amazon: Can you please carry the "REAL" Alpen? I promise I'll then write a 5 star review of the product! :)

Alpen in the red box was my absolute favorite cereal. However, the box recently changed to brown, and along with that so did the taste. I did some searching on the web, and confirmed what I found by comparing the ingredients: they are no longer organic ingredients, and are listed in a different order. The change took place in the UK a couple years ago and it has now happened here in the USA. If the new taste doesn't grow on me, I will have to find another cereal. I wonder if anyone else who purchases on Amazon has noticed the change.

I was excited to receive this after I found out that Amazon sells Alpen. When I tried it, it was good but something different from what I remembered in the UK. I checked the box and this version is made in Canada. I suppose it's the same formula, but something different, which I can't tell what. So I'm not complaining as this is as good, but wanted the others to know. Since I have no choice, I'll keep ordering it, but if Amazon can get the UK version, that'd be great!

I fell in love with Alpen when I lived in the UK. The only version readily available in the US is the Canadian version. I couldn't live without it, but it's not the same as in the UK. If the UK version were available at the same price, I would be thrilled!

I grew up on Alpen and it is still my favorite cereal after 30+ years of enjoying it! It is very difficult to find so I am very happy that Amazon is selling it. Alpen has a light sweet flavor to it and a wonderful consistency. The almonds and raisins are not overbearing (I normally don't like either in anything, but for some reason they are great in Alpen!). I highly recommend this cereal. Add fresh fruit for added tastiness.

This has been my favorite cereal since childhood. I am slightly dissapointed in the size of the box...it is obvious this is not the same cereal I purchased in Germany. The box is too small and there is added sugar that isn't the same as the European version (I believe this must be an American version). But if it's the best I can get, It will do. I have lots of friends in Europe so I can get my "real" fix for Christmas and my birthday.

As a longtime US Alpen fan, I have been eating it since it first came out here in the ‘70s. It’s been through several packaging changes (including some poor design choices) and minor reshuffling of ingredient proportions; but the latest 2014 version seems driven by unfortunate and ill-advised ingredient cost cutting. While the package front shown here is the new one, the ingredient list is not. They obviously count on consumers not noticing.

The original Alpen was a ready-to-eat version of Swiss muesli, with some crunch and an odd but not unappealing sifting of powdered milk. Around the early 2000s Alpen was still sold in the US with basically the same original ingredients and great package graphics—a very Euro-breakfast photo with a wood window looking out on an evocative scene of Swiss mountains and valley. (I love Switzerland, so I’m a sucker for that kind of packaging.) Then sometime in the late 2000s, when UK Weetabix partnered with US natural foods manufacturer, Barbara's Bakery, they redid the package with an amateurish digital cartoon mountain, so it looked like a cheap house-brand Alpen imitation. In 2010 or so, they reintroduced a nicer, more Euro design with photos of the ingredients and reinstated a beautiful Swiss mountain photo, at least on the package back.

Over the years, hazelnuts, almonds, and barley moved down the ingredient list, with nuts sinking even below the skim milk powder. But in the latest repackaging, shown here, which reinstates a mountain photo—though not a full-color one—they have totally eliminated barley, moved wheat to the top ingredient above oats, and dropped the more expensive (but traditional Swiss) hazelnuts below almonds.
