5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT value for the money, February 18, 2010

First of all, I am not an optics expert or guru. I know you get what you pay for in life. But, I also know that not every hunting outing requires a $2000 pair of German Binocs. secondly, I am not a professional outdoorsman. I love to hunt and try to go every chance I get. But, I don't use binoculars 250 days a year. If I did, I would go for some premium glass. I hunt deer in Western Kentucky. So that means mostly wooded areas shots are usually less then 100 yards. Not much wide open turf for me. I bought the Alpen Ridge and I am quite pleased. the optics are good. I get very crisp images. they are light enough for the type of hunting I do. The 10X is about right for my geography. My 11 year old and 8 year old sons made great use of them during a few squirrel hunts and really liked being able to see the squirrels we were hunting. They were worth the purchase price to see the look on my boys faces as they got up close to the animals in the wild. One day, I will hand them down to one of my sons and get myself those Swarovski EL's.

My buddy comapared my Alpen ridge glass to a pair of High end Bushnell's he had. (His cost double what my Alpens cost). In his opinion the Alpens were just a bit better than his.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally an Awesome pair of bino's I can afford!, January 14, 2011

ZW (Alaska, USA) - See all my reviews
After going through a few pairs of cheap binoculars, I stumbled upon these at a local sporting good store. As soon as you pick these up you can tell there not cheap. They have a solid feeling with a rubber like coating for durability & easy grip. When I first looked through these, my first thought was whoa-"these are nice". Very bright and clear. The focus is great, and doesn't need "fine tuning" as often as other pairs I have tried. I really like the lens caps that you can leave on all the time. You can flick them off with your pinky finger when you want to see something and they will just hang there. No more lost lens caps. The strap seems to be high quality and has several take-up sections for larger users. After trying many different brands including much higher priced ones, I quickly came back to the Alpen 10x42's. Although I haven't heard of the Alpen brand before this, I did some research and learned the company was formed by 2 former Bausch & Lomb managers, and their products are made in Japan & China. I am very happy with these binoculars. They serve me very well here in Alaska. You would be hard pressed to find a better set of binoculars for this price

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Value!, July 27, 2011

The Alpen Shasta Ridge 10x42 binoculars are a great binocular at any price, but truly incredible at $140! I surfed the internet looking for binocular reviews, and I read a lot of them. I had never heard of Alpen, but I learned of the Alpen Shasta Ridge 8x42 and 10x42 binoculars at optics4birding dot com. To quote the bottom line of their review on the tab entitled "product reviews"...."These are remarkably high quality binoculars for the price at which they are offered, and worthy competitors for many more expensive optics." After just one week of using them for general purposes, sports/concerts/boating, etc., I couldn't agree more. The view is sharp and bright, with excellent color. This is a simple recommendation...buy the Alpen Shasta Ridge before Alpen raises the price!

This review is from: Alpen Shasta Ridge 10 x 42 Waterproof Roof Prism Binocular (Sports)
I purchased these as a hunting binocular and I am on a budget. I can't believe how clear they are. They are about 10x more clear than my old Barskas and certainly brighter than my friends Leupold. I would highly recommend.

I am not an expert on bino's but these worked well for hunting - didn't fog, allowed me to see clearly for elk and deer hunting. Strap was ok - but I removed it and replaced with a shoulder harness. Lens covers are cheap and don't stay on - lost one almost immediately.
