From Library Journal
Written in lay language, this self-help book aims to guide the patient through the diagnosis of cancer and its aftermath. Using anecdotes from several well-known cancer specialists as well as those from cancer patients, The Alpha Book covers information on getting the best care available via standard and alternative treatments while emphasizing the significant impact such a diagnosis has on family and friends. Al though this book comes dangerously close to pop psychology, it does provide some insights into coping mechanisms useful for all patients, not only those battling cancer. Discussions on methods of reducing risk cover diet, exercise, weight control, smoking, alcohol, environmental hazards, and stress. Those interested in similar books should consider Wendy Schlessel Harpham's Diagnosis Cancer ( LJ 5/15/92) and S.R. Kaura's A Family Doctor's Guide to Understanding and Preventing Cancer: Environmental Risks and Solutions ( LJ 2/1/91).
