Small & Extra Small size comparrison for Alpha Industries M65 coat,
By
This review is from: Alpha Industries Men's M-65 Field Coat (Apparel)
The previous reviewer (C. Sterling) has greatly influenced me to go with Alpha Industries M65 field coat, mainly because it has two internal pockets, and secondly because of the quality.
I did have a chance to try on both the small and extra small as I am nearly same build as C. Sterling. (I am 5'9" 150 lbs. 41" chest) The extra small fits pretty snug, I don't think there's room for a sweater underneath, considering I was already wearing a long sleeve and a t-shirt. I should also mention that it was very stiff to move around in, as the material is very rugged. Although I loved the more slimmer fit of the extra small, I had to go with the small since I didn't want to be uncomfortably stiff and cold. The small is a little baggier, but still fits nice over my body without looking ridiculous. The coat is a little long, but I guess that's expected since it is a field coat after all. The front pockets are all button snap, which I am proud to announce since I am not a fan of velcro flaps. The breast pockets are easily accessible, the bottom ones are not. This is because, the flap hinge sits on top of where the pocket begins. This is not a big issue for me, however, I do wish though, that the bottom two pockets were protruded like the breast pockets. As for the inner two pockets, one is zippered and one has a velcroed square. The velcroed one seems a little wider than the zippered, and just as deep as one of the front pockets. The zippered pocket seems about half inch shorter than the velcroed. Final thoughts: -The quality is awesome for something made in China, though now a days you'd be surprised that some quality goods are made there. -Love the inner pockets, wish there were two more, but that's just asking too much since I carry a lot of stuff on me. -Small is a good size, though I wish it were a hint smaller over all and a bit shorter. -Try them on if you can for sizing and feel. If you live in New York City check out Dave's New York for a better price, and fitting. Or check out their website [...]. They sell all kinds of work wear.

This jacket by Alpha Industries is worth every cent. Great construction, weight, and feel. I ordered a black one and it's now my favorite coat. I just need to purchase a ALS/92 liner for next winter. Make sure that you purchase a size smaller than you normally wear. I normally wear a size M and purchase a small, and I have plenty of room to spare. This coat is also MADE IN THE U.S.A.! (Knoxville, TN to be exact) It's nice to be able to say that about a GREAT product. The customer service from Alpha Industries is very good too. My coat was shipped out the very next business day after I ordered it. If you are looking for the M-65 style jacket, look no further. Btw, this coat looks very much like the black one Jensen Ackles, a.k.a., Dean Winchester, wears in the Television series "Supernatural".

I'm very happy with this jacket so far. It looks good, and the construction and materials appear to be first-rate. It looks to be even sturdier than my old M-65, and that one remains wearable, if a little ratty-looking, after more than fifteen years of heavy use.
Fit: I'm about 6-2/210, and the large fits me quite well. Many jackets are a little short through the sleeves for my long arms, but this one is just about right. Construction: Everything about it looks and feels good and solid, from the stitching to the zipper. The whole jacket feels reassuringly sturdy. If anything, it feels a little stiff, but I expect that will ease up after a little break-in. Features: Pretty much your standard M-65, although the two inside pockets are a nice addition. Definitely water-repellent; it's already kept me dry through some heavy rains. The jacket has buttons to hold a liner; the liner isn't included, but is available separately. (I still have my old one, so this wasn't an issue for me.) Value: The Alpha jacket isn't the least expensive around, but materials and construction appear to be a notch above others I've seen. If you're just looking for a fashion statement, one of the cheaper options might do, but if you're expecting to wear it a lot and use it hard, this one is worth the extra bucks. I expect to be wearing this for years to come.

I found the coat to be well thought out. It is well made from nylon 50/50 cotton. The coat is made in China, my only disappointment. Alpha did receive my email and did change the coat size after I submitted my order here on line. Thank you to the folks at Alpha.
An experienced M-65 owner pointed out the coats are designed to be worn over a full uniform. Order one size smaller than you would ordinarily. This is what I did and am happy with the fit. I usually wear a medium I had Alpha ship a small. The sleeves cover half the length of my hand below the wrist. In the chest I can wear a light sweater and a construction worker's vest (Carhartt) comfortably with a little room to spare. Much more and the coat would be too small. I am 5'5" tall with a 40 inch chest and 145 pounds. 31 inches from the centre of my neck at the shoulders to wrist along a bent arm. I see there is provision for a separate, button on hood. I haven't seen any where to buy this item so far. Yes, the coat has an attached light hood inside the zip-up collar. Incidentally, should you wish to sew on any patches, crests, velcro ect.,you can gain access between the coat shell and liner through the unzipped collar. I bought the liner which I can recommend. Buttoned up by its self, the liner is only just large enough over a light sweater. Fastened into the jacket the fit eases some. Sleeves again a little long, The knitted cuff controls the little extra length. The knitted cuff is comfortable against the skin.

I was under the impression that, for the price, I was buying an authentic Field jacket. I was disappointed when I found that it was imported from China, a fact that was not mentioned in it's description. It is however quite well made, for being Chinese, and the "tall" size is still not long enough for someone 6'3.

I have been buying Alpha Field coats faithfully since my high school days. Typically I purchase a new M-65 jacket every ten years or so because they've proven to be just that durable (I'm usually only compelled to buy a new M-65 after my current one has become embarrassingly dingy and stained from constant wear, but the jacket itself has always held up admirably). I used to always buy my M-65 jackets from the local army surplus store but for some reason, this year, none of my regular spots had any in stock. So I decided to order online with confidence because I was loyal to the brand and I couldn't imagine anything going wrong. However, when I received the jacket, I noticed several problems with construction that I've never experienced before. First of all, two of the interior buttons for securing the lining were nearly falling off. Then, the stitching in several areas was sloppy to the point of being unacceptable, with long threads hanging as if tattered, stitch lines running crookedly, gaps where the stitching is skipped altogether, and even one extremely noticeable area on the collar where it appears as if the sewing machine jammed up and left a clump of knotted thread two inches long. Also, I purchased a liner from a separate vendor in anticipation of receiving the jacket and discovered that the medium liner doesn't fit the medium jacket. The liner is too big, bunches up underneath the jacket, and if I wear it unzipped the liner bulges outward visibly and makes for a sloppy appearance. I imagine that a large liner must have been mistakenly labeled as a medium. Either that, or Alpha no longer even bothers to ensure that the correct sized liners actually fit their corresponding jackets. But the worst problem is with the lower exterior pockets. Every Alpha field jacket I've worn in the past had deep pockets that ran all the way to the bottom hem of the jacket and allowed me to carry gloves, coffee mugs and even books around comfortably. The first time I went to put my hands in the pockets of my new jacket I discovered the pockets are about half as deep as they normally should be. My fingers hit the bottom of the pocket and half my hand was still sticking out the top. Perhaps this is some ridiculous new design for people who don't like to carry things in their pockets and prefer to have their thumbs and knuckles still exposed to the elements on cold days. Or, more likely, this is just evidence of extremely poor quality control. I'm willing to believe that I was simply the unlucky recipient of a dud jacket and that this poorly stitched and poorly tailored garment is just a random anomaly that managed to slip past the inspectors at the factory. Of course, since the last time I bought an Alpha jacket was 2001 and no one seems to sell them in stores anymore (at least not near me), I have no way of checking stock to see if all Alpha products carry similar flaws nowadays. I'd hate to think that a brand I was once loyal to has fallen off so much in quality, but I was so disappointed in my latest Alpha purchase I doubt I'll be taking a chance and buying anything by this brand in the future. A shame.

Ok, i dont think i am adding much to what is already said here. i purchased the jacket with the liner. as mentioned in other reviews, buy a size smaller. mine is a small (i am 5'7 and 65 kgs) and it is a little loose on me. it gets better with the liner in, and if you wearing a couple of layers underneath.
built well, feels good, looks good. has the feel of a rugged article of clothing. i hope it will last quite a while. it lost one star cuz the size issue, but other than that, this is a great jacket! i highly recommend.

Another fan of the classic M-65 here - Alpha makes an excellent jacket!,
This review is from: Alpha Industries Men's M-65 Field Coat (Apparel)
OK - it's made in China, but apparently to original Alpha/Mil specs. The jacket is EVERY bit the equal of the '67 by Apparel Corp of America, or the '87 by So-Sew I've got. In fact, as mentioned in another review, It might be a bit better. The fabric itself seems to be a little tighter weave. The jacket was NWT and came with replacement buttons and snaps if needed. No loose threads found (a common problem with the actual production jackets when they were new). Jacket is a 50/50 NYCO construction and unlike the polyester/cotton or just plain cotton replicas - it will take a lot of wear and tear! Zipper says Alpha, and is made in US and is solid brass.
Color - The color is variously described as olive drab or sage. It's sage. The jacket is noticeably lighter than either of the other authentic M-65s I have, but in a good way. Essentially, it's the faded green color all these jackets get over time but without any deterioration of the finish of the fabric that comes with natural fading from washing/etc. Color is solid all through the jacket. Size - for me the large/regular was a very good fit. I'm 6'0" and 210lbs and do use a button in liner (not the alpha one)during colder months. Cost - you can't usually get these for much less than the pricing you see at the manufacturer's site - but you CAN get cheaper coats by other manufacturers. This is a good example of getting what you pay for. The key is the NYCO construction! I had one when I was a teen and I did everything in it and to it and it never failed me - I simply grew out of it. This jacket will provide me with the same durability and practicality that one did without a doubt. I highly recommend THIS jacket if you're in the market for a "classic" M-65

I've been waiting and shopping for over a year. I finally puchased this one, and I'm glad I did. Regarding sizing, I'm 6' and 185lbs. I got the Medium/Long and it's a perfect fit.

I fell in love with the usefulness of the military uniforms and jackets while I served. This jacket works so well in cold weather and I am so happy with the authentic look. This jacket is my favorite I've ever owned so far. This jacket will last so long, I'll be able to give it to my grandson! THIS JACKET DOES NOT COME WITH A QUILTED LINER AND WILL HAVE TO BE BOUGHT SEPARATELY.
