I do a lot of long distance driving and finding a jacket that has long-term comfort is tough.

The MA-1 provides comfort in spring, fall, and winter driving. It's not bulky, your seat belt fits perfectly in the bottom waist band, arms are longer so they don't ride up, pockets are still 100% accessible with a seat belt on, and by simply opening the jacket zipper you never overheat.

This jacket is specifically cut as a sit down jacket. It still works fine as a walk around jacket, but you'll find that, when zipped, the waist will want to ride up. Not a big deal, but worth a mention.

I bought mine directly from Alpha Industries and they stand behind their product. For instance, my leather zipper pull came off and I contacted them for a replacement zipper pull. They responded by sending me an entirely new jacket at no cost. Unbelievable!

Cost directly through Alpha Industries was $99 + S/H ($9). Be sure to look for an online coupon promo code to save 10-15% or free S/H.

A classic and great jacket, as stated in many of the reviews here. The problem I found with this is that the tall size didn't appear to me to be much longer than regular. I contacted Alpha Industries who confirmed that in the tall sizes the sleeves are only 1/2 inch longer than regular, and the body only 3/4 inch longer. Hardly a "tall" size at all, when most clothing manufacturers' tall sizes are usually a couple of inches longer.

There's a different version of this jacket, called the "Re-Issued", that is slightly longer (also slimmer fitting) and which worked for this tall guy. That jacket had been discontinued but can still be found in some colors/sizes.

I used to wear this jacket from the US air force flight training in the 70's. The one I've just ordered and reveiced from amazon is half as good look. I like the comfort this jacket gives me when sitting in tight space such as driving my car long distance. It was designed for that purpose and still fulfil its duty.

I really tried to like this jacket, but the main problem I have is with the zipper - it does not stay zipped all the way up, and gradually slides down as you move around especially if you are wearing an under-layer or scarf underneath it. I went through 3 of these (returning each) and each had the same issue; so I'm not sure if this is a design flaw or just a coincidence. The other problem is probably just with my build - I am 5'7" and about 145lbs with a rather thin build and normally wear a size medium. While the medium fits my body pretty good, the waist is short - and yes I know that's how it's supposed to fit but it would just ride up on me way too much - so I took advice from some of the comments here and purchased a size up (large). While it did not ride up as much, the rest of the jacket just looked ridiculously huge and wide on me. Bottom line, if you are a fat guy like 6 out of every 10 American men, then going a size up should be fine. A normal fitting size makes a good short waste jacket on a woman - especially from behind ;). And yes it is warm, but you definitely either need a scarf or should wear a fleece underneath that zips up to cover your neck for cold weather. Just beware that the zipper might not stay up. Good Ol' 'Made in China' workmanship! ;)

These Alpha MA-1s are fabulous--functional, well-made, and the price is right. I got this one in the replica blue ("Navy Blue") and it looks great. The price was less at the time than the Sage Green, which was what I really had been interested in, having been in the Navy and in support of the Naval aviators who wore that type of jacket. But the blue is maybe more subtle for city wear. . . .
I'm in the market for a lightweight version to replace windbreakers and jean jackets. We'll see. Also note that I will be answering my own question for this jacket by saying that I now know the $40 versions are totally inferior to the real product--the Alpha material is firmer, the seams are sturdier, the zippers are better, the knit collar, cuffs, and waistband are superior, so the value far exceeds the 50% more in price than the cheap knockoffs. I AM a believer! If my closets were large enough, I'd probably have a half-dozen variants of these flight jackets. Hey, maybe I'll do that anyway!

I've always loved this style of Jacket, and this is my very first. It is a great style that is timeless.

The quality is great, and the materials are awesome. It is very comfortable, light, warm, and water proof. I've worn this jacket with a simple hoodie on the inside and it keeps me very warm during the winter. On the warmer days, I just go with a t-shirt with this Jacket, and it's perfect.

I'm 5'6", 140 lbs, and with a size small, it fits me quite well. I'm sure a medium sized jacket would be just as good, but I like smaller sized Jackets.

Lots of people complain about the cut of the jacket, to each their own, just know that the sleeves are longer than the rest of the jacket in proportion. So if you don't like a jacket that cuts short on the torso, I would avoid these kind of jackets.

In summary, I love this jacket. It's so versatile, and you can flip it inside out to reveal a bright orange side, incase you are ever in some sort of natural disaster.

Big one or two sizes up. This is the second one I have bought and both have been too small. Always buy big.

Great build quality, but poofy. These jackets have a very round fit. SO they either will do you justice or you'll look like the Michelin Man. Im 6'0, 190, broad shoulders and a 43" Chest. I normally wear a size LArge in a jacket. If you order true to size it will fit a little more snug if you just enjoy wearing it with a t shirt and no layers underneath (ala Kanye West fit). If you plan on wearing a hoodie and layering then size up one size. Just know, it is not slim fit, these are traditional fit, and they fit puffy.
