5.0 out of 5 stars Small & Extra Small size comparrison for Alpha Industries M65 coat, November 29, 2009
By
A. Lee (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Alpha Industries Men's M-65 Field Coat (Apparel)
The previous reviewer (C. Sterling) has greatly influenced me to go with Alpha Industries M65 field coat, mainly because it has two internal pockets, and secondly because of the quality.

I did have a chance to try on both the small and extra small as I am nearly same build as C. Sterling. (I am 5'9" 150 lbs. 41" chest)
The extra small fits pretty snug, I don't think there's room for a sweater underneath, considering I was already wearing a long sleeve and a t-shirt. I should also mention that it was very stiff to move around in, as the material is very rugged.

Although I loved the more slimmer fit of the extra small, I had to go with the small since I didn't want to be uncomfortably stiff and cold. The small is a little baggier, but still fits nice over my body without looking ridiculous. The coat is a little long, but I guess that's expected since it is a field coat after all. The front pockets are all button snap, which I am proud to announce since I am not a fan of velcro flaps. The breast pockets are easily accessible, the bottom ones are not. This is because, the flap hinge sits on top of where the pocket begins. This is not a big issue for me, however, I do wish though, that the bottom two pockets were protruded like the breast pockets. As for the inner two pockets, one is zippered and one has a velcroed square. The velcroed one seems a little wider than the zippered, and just as deep as one of the front pockets. The zippered pocket seems about half inch shorter than the velcroed.

Final thoughts:
-The quality is awesome for something made in China, though now a days you'd be surprised that some quality goods are made there.
-Love the inner pockets, wish there were two more, but that's just asking too much since I carry a lot of stuff on me.
-Small is a good size, though I wish it were a hint smaller over all and a bit shorter.
-Try them on if you can for sizing and feel. If you live in New York City check out Dave's New York for a better price, and fitting. Or check out their website [...]. They sell all kinds of work wear.

This jacket by Alpha Industries is worth every cent. Great construction, weight, and feel. I ordered a black one and it's now my favorite coat. I just need to purchase a ALS/92 liner for next winter. Make sure that you purchase a size smaller than you normally wear. I normally wear a size M and purchase a small, and I have plenty of room to spare. This coat is also MADE IN THE U.S.A.! (Knoxville, TN to be exact) It's nice to be able to say that about a GREAT product. The customer service from Alpha Industries is very good too. My coat was shipped out the very next business day after I ordered it. If you are looking for the M-65 style jacket, look no further. Btw, this coat looks very much like the black one Jensen Ackles, a.k.a., Dean Winchester, wears in the Television series "Supernatural".

4.0 out of 5 stars A quality jacket, March 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm very happy with this jacket so far. It looks good, and the construction and materials appear to be first-rate. It looks to be even sturdier than my old M-65, and that one remains wearable, if a little ratty-looking, after more than fifteen years of heavy use.

Fit: I'm about 6-2/210, and the large fits me quite well. Many jackets are a little short through the sleeves for my long arms, but this one is just about right.

Construction: Everything about it looks and feels good and solid, from the stitching to the zipper. The whole jacket feels reassuringly sturdy. If anything, it feels a little stiff, but I expect that will ease up after a little break-in.

Features: Pretty much your standard M-65, although the two inside pockets are a nice addition. Definitely water-repellent; it's already kept me dry through some heavy rains. The jacket has buttons to hold a liner; the liner isn't included, but is available separately. (I still have my old one, so this wasn't an issue for me.)

Value: The Alpha jacket isn't the least expensive around, but materials and construction appear to be a notch above others I've seen. If you're just looking for a fashion statement, one of the cheaper options might do, but if you're expecting to wear it a lot and use it hard, this one is worth the extra bucks. I expect to be wearing this for years to come.
