OK but nothing revolutionary,

Basic summary of the book: Work out intensely and eat a clean diet. Nothing revolutionary here. Although I did like the section that talked about manliness vs. stereotypical macho stuff that often passes for manliness.
A couple of things I did not like about the book: - It's only a 10 week challenge. You can shed a significant amount of fat in that time, but to build any appreciable muscle takes a LOT longer than that. - The alpha scale presented uses biceps size as a measure, but there is nothing to correlate biceps size to your body structure. Biceps size is largely determined by your bone structure. Would have liked to see biceps measured against height/weight or waist size to make it more meaningful. - Trying to hold the workout frequency suggested long term not realistic for most trainees in my opinion. The diet advice was very good. Eat clean, unprocessed foods. Eat more frequent, smaller meals. Solid. If you are looking for a book on body transformation, I prefer either Brawn or Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great by Stuart McRobert.

This book is ok for guys who are just starting out to get back in shape, but I wouldn't recommend it for guys who have been dieting and working out and want to take things to the next level.

The Alpha Male Challenge addresses both the psychological and physical aspects of being a "real" man. Each week brings a different suggestion that focuses on confidence to leadership. In addition, each exercise routine is different from the others which guarantees your muscles will be taxed. Best of all, if you have a question, go to the alpha male challenge website [...] and you can send James or Rick a question...James responded within a day. Based on your current condition (advanced, intermediate, beginner) you can select the appropriate exercise routine. Unlike many other routines that can be finished in the 20-30 min range, I find that these routines require a minimum of 45 min. However, this is time well spent as the results (muscle size and strength) have been very positive for me. I haven't lost much weight, but that's on me. For weight loss, you have to concentrate on what you eat and exercising becomes secondary. AMC addresses nutrition, but you have to stick their recommendations if want the fat to come off. Overall, AMC is worthy for your consideration. The exercise routines alone makes for a good book.

I received the Alpha Male Challenge as an advanced copy from James Villepigue and Rick Collins a few days ago. I enjoyed reading the book and immediately followed their logic and goal of the book: To help men become better people. Do not be thrown by the title, as the Alpha Male is NOT a bully but a gentleman with confidence and self-respect. AND it is a workout book on top of that! The workout is easy to follow even for beginners and can be challenging enough for intermediate and advanced athletes. The tests in the book are fun and I look forward to seeing a competition soon on who is the Ultimate Alpha Male!!!

As a fitness professional and recreational bodybuilder, I've certainly read my share of diet/workout books. There are some pretty good ones out there, too. But the "Alpha Male Challenge" is in a class by itself. Authors James Villepigue and Rick Collins have created a program to transform lives - not just bodies. It's a book for any man who wants to take it to the next level... and reach his potential for both physical AND emotional strength.
In other words, it's a blueprint for becoming the kind of man that this strong, empowered woman can admire! There's a lot more to being a man than simply looking like one... and it's this mind-body connection that Villepigue and Collins explore throughout the book. While each component of the program is presented separately, the "big picture" of the true "Alpha Male" is always in view. What does it consist of? That "big picture" starts with the "4 C's": commitment, confidence, courage and conscience... and the uniquely masculine ways in which these qualities can be expressed. The paleo diet-inspired nutrition plan is also spot-on. It's a cutting-edge, scientifically-validated version of the diet human beings evolved to eat, with variations for accelerating fat loss while living life in the "real world." And the workouts? LOL! To the general public, "exercise" is a dirty word associated with unrelenting (and often unrewarding) drudgery. Needless to state, the "Alpha Wave Training" workouts devised by the authors - in conjuction with David Sandler, MS, CSCS*D, CCS, HFD - turn this conception on its head. Sure, discipline is required, but there's sufficient variety, flexibility and yes, fun, to engage all but the most dedicated couch potatoes. And speaking of "couch potatoes," this is a good moment to address the flippant - and wholly inaccurate - "good only for beginners," remark made by a previous reviewer. While the "Challenge" is certainly accessible to beginners, it's far from a "beginner" program. I know quite a few seasoned gym rats - many of whom would be humbled by their scores on the "MaleScale" and subsequent workout performances. Needless to state, far too many men train to their strengths, and neglect their weaknesses... a situation that the "Wave" routines are (superbly) designed to correct. There are three training levels that vary in volume and intensity to account for differences in starting strength and fitness; plus a range of alternative movements for different capabilities. Thus, there's a place at the "Challenge" starting line for newbies and hardcores alike. What more can I say? The "Alpha Male Challenge" is an awesome book... one of the (very) few I can recommend without reservation. Five Stars!!!

I was impressed with the overall tone as well as the technical content of this book. The workouts are well thought out and never boring due to the dynamic nature of the program. A transformation plan which seeks to make you a better man in all the right ways through specific actions as opposed to vauge generalities is quite refreshing and helps ensure individual success. The science behind the plan is solid and the success of the authors previous works undrewrites the ability to communicate the complexities of the Challenge from a solid base. If you want to jumpstart your fitness, nutrition, and positive image in a manly way that offers no apologies in pushing you to be all that you should be, this is a great read!

The "Alpha Male Challenge" is a phenomenal book, and ranks right up there with the best of the best in fitness/life books. I completely disagree with someone's earlier post stating this book is only for beginners. I have been actively lifting/exercising at least five days a week for the past 15 years, and this book has been a great tool for me. I am probably like most guys out there in the fact that I want to lose some fat and get in the best shape of my life.
What I like best about the book is it tells you EXACTLY what to do. A great person said, "Once you know what you want, find an expert who has already achieved it, and do exactly what they do, and you'll have the same results". The challenge for most books is with the EXACTLY part of it. Many fitness books/magazines I've read are full of facts/figures, but are lacking in the detailed "how to". I'm the kind of person that doesn't want to waste a workout guessing what I should do next. I want to KNOW what the most beneficial exercise is, how much weight, how many reps, time between sets, etc. I also want more than just a day or two of workouts. This awesome book gives you EVERY single workout for the duration of the challenge. No guessing, wondering, hoping, second-guessing, or wishing is needed. The other great thing about this book is the variety of workouts. For me personally, I'm always motivated by a new workout for a week or two. Then it begins to get a little stale. Then I don't work out as intensely. Then there are limited results. EVERY workout in the book is different, challenging and exciting. If you have the "want to", the "Alpha Male Challenge" will show you the "how to".

If you are looking for a NEW workout plan this may be for you. It helps guide you in the right steps toward achieving your goal and keeping a focused mind. That said, if you are a beginner you should definitely try this book. If you are advanced in working out like myself, I would not recommend it as you should already be in this mind set everyday.

James Villepigue and Rick Collins did an outstanding job with this book. The presentation makes it easy to read and follow, and the workout explanations and instructions are top notch. If you follow the program outlined in the Alpha Male Challenge, you WILL improve yourself. Now, the key component I want to bring attention to is that, yes, it is a workout book... but its much more... James & Rick really address the issue of building an "Alpha Male" attitude... this will certainly help you in dedicating yourself to your fitness regime, but more importantly, it applies to so many other areas of your life.
I enjoyed the writing style, and if you're looking to find a book that will get you off the couch... and motivate you to get started... this is it! This is a quote from James & Rick which really jumped out at me in reading the book, and it really sums it up: "The truth is that every man has the power to make dramatic changes to his life. It starts with choices. Managing those choices - taking action to master them - is the key to success" . Buy it, Read it, DO IT. |
