The AlphaTRAK system seems to be a good product if you can get a blood sample. The meter is easy to use and it calibrated well against the one my vet uses. I had a lot of difficulty getting a sample from my cat who is otherwise quite stoic and puts up with a lot. It's harder than it looks on the DVD. The lancets did not draw blood from the ear as I could not find a vein and they just bounced off the foot pads. Too bad the kit does not include a lancet pen. That would have helped a great deal according to a friend of mine who uses one on his cat. I called Abbott Animal Health Customer Service but they could not recommend a compatible lancet pen nor did they know if one would be available in the future. They took my name and number but I never received a call back about it so I assume the answer is no. I will likely go out and buy a lancet pen, but until I do this kit is unusable for me. I think an expensive kit like this should either include a pen or have a recommendation for a compatible pen.

I purchased this meter to test my cat who was diagnosed with diabetes just about a month ago. The meter uses a very small amount of blood and is very easy to use (just read the instruction book, first; I let my father play with it and he messed up the time and all kinds of other settings in just a few seconds!). I used the meter faithfully twice a day for a week, and then once a day for two weeks, and then the vet decided, based on my readings, that we had beat the diabetes into remission. Hooray!

And just in time, too. Although the meter worked superbly, I was just about to run out of test strips (the system came with 50), and I realized that they would cost almost half of what the entire system cost to replace! My cat is fairly patient, but we would go through two and three test strips per reading because I'm just not skilled enough to nick the vein perfectly every time.

So the bottom line is that this is an excellent product, but the test strip prices are out of sight!

The lancets were the only problem I had with the outfit. I used a "baby bootie" filled with rice to warm the ear. That helped alot in helping to bring blood. The main thing is really stab kitty's ear. Don't be hesitant, just do it!!!!!
