The letter, word, and picture are all on the same side, and the back contains an attractive fabriclike image. Unless you're trying to associate particular letters with stripes or something, these won't work as flashcards. They make a very attractive reading/language toy, and would make pretty art for a kid's room (or an adult with a taste for the whimsical).

I love these cards! They are large and on very heavy board, and the images are beautiful! I can see someone using them for the nursery wall as a border or artwork. My 10-month-old smiles and really pays attention when I review the cards with him, and I like that there are some unusual animals (N is narwhal). We have more fun with these cards than if I read a basic letter book. Perhaps the letter on each card could be slightly bigger? Otherwise I can't think of anything I'd change.
