Book Description

3 and up
For Alphabet Fiesta, Anne Miranda commissioned six- to eight-year-olds in Madrid to create the art. The result is a witty, charming stroll through the alphabet in two languages. It begins with Armand the armadillo, who receives “an absolutely adorable invitation to a surprise party” (“una invitacion absolutamente adorable, le invitaban a la fiesta sorpresa”) and ends at that party for Zaza the zebra. In between, young readers meet an engaging cast of characters who entertain while they teach.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-2-In a lighthearted A-to-Z romp, similar to Jane Bayer's A My Name Is Alice (Dutton, 1992) or Crescent Dragonwagon's Alligator Arrived with Apples (Macmillan, 1987), all of Zelda Zebra's friends plan to attend her surprise party and look to bring something to make her birthday really special. Finding words that begin with the same letter in both English and Spanish is challenging, and the text works a tad better in English. However, overall both versions succeed in using the letter of the page consistently while creating a cohesive story. The illustrations, done by grade-school-aged children living in Spain, have a certain primitive charm and freshness. The mediums vary, from watercolor (the majority) to colored pencil, oil pastel to marker, but all of the pictures are big and bright, balancing nicely with the text on the facing page. This is a good tool not only for instruction in the Spanish alphabet but for inspiring art projects as well.

From Booklist

Ages 4-7. After "poring over Spanish and English dictionaries to find key words beginning with the same letters in both languages," Miranda "chose several 'word pairs' for each letter of the alphabet and wove them into a story." Thus, she has composed a truly bilingual tale about Zelda the zebra's friends, gathering for her surprise birthday fiesta at the zoo. Illustrated with children's artwork produced in workshops that used Miranda's text, this nifty book will be appreciated by bilingual teachers, and it may inspire them to have students create their own illustrations for the story. More About the Author

When I was a little girl I loved rhymes, especially the ones my grandmother used to recite to me. Now that I am all grown up, I enjoy writing them. One rhyme my grandmother liked to say as she bounced me on her knee was "to market, to market to buy a fat pig, home again, home again jiggity jig!". But, she never told me what happened to the pig when it got home. I always wondered, so I wrote a funny book about a frazzled shopper who brings home one very naughty pig and a host of other uncooperative animals from the market. Of course, they make a big mess. What, oh what will she do? You'll have to read the book to find out! To Market To Market, illustrated by the amazing Janet Stevens, has been translated into Korean as has Monster Math illustrated by Polly Powell. Be sure to look for my other books, including Glad Monster, Sad Monster with Caldecott Award winning illustrator Ed Emberley. Glad Monster has recently been translated into French and Spanish and is available in France, Canada, Spain and much of the Spanish-speaking world. How cool is that?

I'm currently living in Spain with my two grown-up basketball-playing boys, my husband, and my trusty computer. I enjoy painting, gardening, blogging, facebooking, singing barbershop and of course watching my boys play basketball. I'm still writing away and may soon have a new book or two to add to my list of published works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy divertido and great for phoneme recognition, March 15, 2007
This review is from: Alphabet Fiesta: An English/Spanish Alphabet Story (Hardcover)
I am a US American living in Spain. My 4 year old loves having this read to her in English or in Spanish. It's been great for our vocabulary. She enjoys pointing out the "d"s or listening for all the words with the sound [d]. During the day, she pores over the childrens' illustrations discovering delightful details such as the Dalmation car's tail!
At night, I usually read it in English only and it works well as a bedtime story.

This is a really cute book about animals (A-Y) being invited and preparing to go to Zelda the zebra's party. Even the Spanish translation is decent (unlike alot of bilingual books), although a couple of words are forced. It's great for building vocabulary.
