Book Description

March 1, 2008
Best known for designing the seminal Beatles album cover, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Sir Peter Blake, born in 1932, is widely considered the godfather of British Pop art. Across his oeuvre, Blake has always drawn inspiration from popular culture, often collaging disparate elements or quoting from works by other artists. Over the years he has continued to produce art for many musicians, including Ian Dury, Paul Weller and Oasis. And today, he is hugely influential among contemporary fine artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin.
In 2007, Tate Liverpool presented a major retrospective exhibition of Blake's paintings. At the same time, London's Paul Stolper Gallery collaborated with the renowned fine art printmakers, Coriander Studio, to publish a new portfolio of prints and the accompanying book, Peter Blake: An Alphabet.
Since the 1950s Blake has maintained a deep interest in the letters of the alphabet. This exquisitely fashioned volume reproduces all 26 of the new prints--one for each letter of the alphabet. Each visual interpretation is a collage of images from vintage cards, magazines and books, and the finished works are at once nostalgic and whimsical, humorous and fascinating. This spectacular abecedarium celebrates the interest, from childhood onwards, that we all share in letters and words. With an interview by the renowned art writer Mel Gooding and a specially designed cover by the artist, it is required reading for all Peter Blake fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars A to Z and everything in between, March 25, 2008
This review is from: An Alphabet by Peter Blake (Hardcover)

British pop artist Peter Blake continues his tradition of creating fascinating graphic art with these twenty-six silkscreen prints of the alphabet. Each montage mixes period graphic items relating to the letter mostly taken from children's spelling and reading books plus a liberal sprinkling of each letter in various type fonts.

Just seeing one or two of these prints is a treat but to see all twenty-six in the book is very, very repetitive I thought. Unfortunately the format doesn't give Blake much chance to vary the design. Each print has its letter large in the middle (a wise choice to make each one a different font) and at least three fixed graphic items in the same place twenty-six times: an alphabet across the bottom, a semaphore cigarette card and a graphic with the letter and illustration. The rest of the space is filled up with other graphics. It doesn't also help that the prints in the book are reduced to half size so that what text pieces there are remain unreadable.

The first few pages have an interview with the artist where he talks about his childhood and art training and the idea behind the alphabet prints. I thought it was an interesting book but I doubt I'll look through it too often.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, April 15, 2008

This review is from: An Alphabet by Peter Blake (Hardcover)
I read an article about Peter Blake's work and as a collage artist I was eager to see the alphabet collages created by him. I was disappointed to discover the poor quality of the photo reproductions or maybe the original photos were to blame, or perhaps a combination of the two. I would have returned the book had it been worth the cost and effort.
