Great educational value with real train footage,

My son just turned two and this is now his favorite video/dvd. It is approximately one hour of real train footage. The narrator and captions follow the alphabet to explain many aspects of train travel and general information about trains. The video is neither annoying (a relief after too many Thomas the Tank Engine videos) nor exciting. Yet, my son is riveted by the footage. He also shouts out the alphabet letters with the narrator.I highly recommend this video to anyone with kids 18 months to 5 years. Especially if your children like the actual footage rather than animation. Also check out the Real Wheels series and Straight Up (and Imax movie on helicopters).

This is an amazing video, perfect for approx. ages 2-4. It goes through all kinds of train vocabulary following the alphabet, and explaining each word in very simple language (my 2 year old can learn and understand new "big words"). It provides plenty of repetition of words, encouraging kids to practice them outloud. The video footage is great too for kids who like trains (real trains, not toys). My son is constantly requesting this video, and he can watch it far longer than any other videos we have because it is so engaging. Superb.
As an aside, I don't recommend Thomas train videos. They have nice footage, but the stories are aweful - all about trains getting into trouble and being mean to each other, resulting in punishment (as opposed to modelling good behavior and manners).

Real Trains for Little People,

If you are sick of Thomas videos, this is a great video for your Young train enthusiasts. My 3 year-old twin sons have learned quite a bit of train jargon from this. It is slow but great for long car rides in the DVD player (if you can stand the narrator's voice). Instead of saying "put the trains together, Mommy", my son says "Couple the freight car to the engine" - no joke! It is informative and a break from other train videos.

If your children love trains they will love this DVD. They show all types of trains and other items related to trains. They give the names for a lot of the things in alphabetical order so it is also a very good learning tool. My 3yo learned the ABC song watching this one over and over.

A good video for kids to learn and watch a national pastime the train. It has worked a a excellent learning tool for my grandsons who go with me to the train station and are stimulated to talk about whats going on around them. Good shots of a variety and types of trains

We bought this video as a souvenir after a ride on a train, but my son loves to watch it often (he's almost 4 now) Each letter has several video clips of real trains in action and he loves to tell me what letter and train is coming next when we watch it together.

My 4 1/2 year old son had a long car ride and this was one of the DVDs he asked to see over and over again. Its good for this age group and for those kids who love trains. The aphabet part is nice as well, never hurts to sneak a little education in at the same time.

Simple format, but introduces children to REAL railroading,
By
This review is from: The Alphabet Train (DVD)
We received this as a Christmas present, and my children loved it! Best of all, the video utilizes some of the best preserved railroads in the country such as the Durango & Silverton and Illinois Railway Museum. Someone gave it a bad review and said it was only for "model train enthusiasts". I'm not sure which video he was watching since it contains real life trains (Santa Fe & Burlington Northern) as well as museum trains and only on the letter 'Z' does it even show an LGB set around someone's pool. I would even recommed that most adults watch it once, just for the educational value of seeing today's railroads in action!

My son loves this movie,

I bought the video tape version of this movie because my 3 year-old son loves trains. He absolutely loves this movie! He has learned to say his ABC's and recognize a lot of his letters. He has learned a great deal about trains and we have discussed such words as "danger" and "gauge". He now looks for railroad crossing signs everywhere we go and can tell you how to be safe around trains. He can also tell you the difference between a steam and diesel engine and identify the correct train just by looking at them. It is very educational on lots of levels.
The only negative thing I can say about it is that the video is not of very good quality--it is "jumpy" and I can't correct it with tracking. I am now buying the DVD because my son loves the movie so much and I am hoping the digital quality will make it better to watch.

My two year old son loves this video. He can sing the alphabet song now. He wasn't even interested before he watched this video. I have even learned a lot and I enjoy watching the video too!
