5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids and for Writers April 12, 2011

First I have a disclosure to make: I sell a lot of these on Amazon Marketplace. Until I discovered the more advanced, but less reliable Dana I also did most of my writing on one of these. I still occasionally pull out my rugged old 3000 when I need to be away from home for a while, for instance if I'm going on a week-long camping trip. I have done some of my best writing on my 3000; and I love the simplicity of it. The AlphaSmart 3000 is an example of a well made product that does everything it was designed to do with excellence.

Who Would Benefit From Owning It:

The 3000 is a good choice for both children and adults. It was designed and built with grade school children in mind. It is therefore simple, rugged, and reliable. They come standard with an applet that teaches touch-typing on a QWERTY keyboard. As well as a spell check and a simple plain text word processor. The 3000 weighs about two pounds and is built on a chassis of rugged ABS plastic. Depending on the software version you may or may not be able to add and remove different learning applets.

Adults may also benefit from the 3000. It has a full size QWERTY keyboard and stores up to 87 pages of plain text. Its reliability and toughness are nearly unmatched, only the much more expensive NEO is more reliable. The 3000 is ideal for writers who need a portable tool that can go almost anywhere. For example if you were taking a road trip, or a camping trip, or a cross country bicycle trip and you wanted to be able to write on the go without worrying about your laptop then this is the tool for you. The 3000 turns on and off almost instantly. And there's no forgetting to save because it saves everything you type as you type it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Word Processor November 4, 2010
I purchased the Alphasmart 3000 to use during NaNoWriMo write-ins since I do not own a netbook and I wanted my writing to be portable. I find that the Alphasmart 3000 is easy to carry around and has a solid construction. The battery life in this unit lasts for hundreds of hours. I should not have to change the batteries for at least a year. The unit is instant on and off, no having to wait for a computer to boot up and it automatically saves the text at all times. I simply could press a button and start writing without distraction. I like the feel of the keyboard since it is close to full sized and it has a satisfying click that reminds me of an old-fashioned typewriter. After the write-in, I was able to come home and upload the text into my computer via a USB cable without a problem. The only drawback to the unit was that it did not have a word count feature and the word processing software is somewhat primitive.

Due to the small screen size, I was not certain if I would like writing on the Alphasmart, but I am becoming a convert to it. The screen is 4 lines high and 40 characters in length. The LCD screen has a high contrast and is easy to read. Since I am able to scroll up and down and do minor editing on it, I am able to keep my train of thought as I write, leaving the main editing to my desktop at home. During the write-in, I was not distracted by websurfing as the writers with netbooks or laptops were, all my time was funneled toward the written word and at the end of the evening, I discovered that the final word count of my project was much higher due to this. I also liked that I did not have to fight for a chair near a power outlet as the other writers did. My Alphasmart 3000 has all the power it needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars light, cheap, sturdy, instant-on, no distractions writing September 10, 2010

I'm an unsentimental type, or think I am, but I enjoy working on it. I didn't think I would- I put off buying it for a year or two after I heard about it. It's a fun, odd device that's worth trying. It's more convenient than a laptop- it's lighter, more sturdy, never gets hot, and goes for 70 hours on three triple a batteries.

I spend a lot of time writing and if you do as well I would say this is worth experimenting with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Little device August 31, 2010

If you are a writer and you want to focus on writing without wasting paper or cramping your hand, this little gizzmo is the best thing. I use it for writing my journal, school assignments and other essays as well as the book I'm working on. It is the handiest thing and since it uses AA batteries, it is easy and cheap to power. It also has the handy feature of doubling as a keyboard, which is a space saving feature. Type while you are on the train, plane, or while at the beach or on a back country hike. It is very light weight and compact, though when packing it, I would recommend getting a carry case as you might break some keys. However, it is worth it to get one or even one of the newer models. I recommend it.

Important word of caution: If you are buying a used AlphaSmart, replace the internal CR2032 battery immediately. This is the battery that saves the memory. If it dies you will lose everything. Because of this possibility, the manufacturer recommends that the user download important files often. I bought a spare battery which I keep taped inside the machine. I change this battery once a year.

Having sounded that note of caution,

I love this machine! It has set me free.

As others have said, it is easy to take anywhere and use under any circumstances. It is reliable and dependable. I use it in classes, meetings and anywhere I want to write, including the car and outdoors. I have Essential Tremor in my hands which makes writing difficult, especially when I'm under stress, as in most situations where I'm trying to take notes.

It's light, sturdy and easy to use. Press the "On Butten" and start typing. I'm not a techie. The learning curve on my relatively simple cell phone was steep. I learned how to use my AlphaSmart in about five minutes. How many electronic items have you seen that are so simple to use and so user-friendly that complete instructions can be, and are, printed on the bottom? It even has a phone number, a website address and an e-mail address for tech support! I have the model with eight files but it's capacity is still huge. I have never run out of space. I like having my text saved automatically. You can also protect files with a password if you like.

The spell-check is cumbersome on the model I have, so I don't use it. I save that operation and major editing until I have downloaded the text into my word program. This does not detract from my Five Star rating in the least.

The AlphaSmart has my highest recommendation.
