Two boys' review: Obscure words and muted illustrations,

As the head of the bedtime story reading group in our house I'm always on the lookout for new tongue twisters and vocabulary builders. That's why I grabbed a copy of AlphaZoo Christmas, an alphabet picture book that combines two of my sons' favorite topics: Animals and Christmas.
However, the book would've never made it home had I bothered to thumb to the pages for I, Q and U: I - Interested iquana impresses icy individual Q--Quick-stepping quetzals quiet quintuplets U--Unsteady uakari utilizes umbrella This is not a rhyming book nor is it a tongue-twister. In fact, we spent most of our time scratching our heads to figure out what was going on. The illustrations were muted depictions of each letter's list of words but not a single one elicited the "ooh-ahh" response I expect from children's picture books. In summary, if you want an alphabet book or a tongue-twister, pick up Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book! or Fox in Socks, respectively. If you want a Christmas book with "ooh-ahh" illustrations, pick up either Santa Claus the World's Number One Toy Expert by Marla Frazee or Christmas Magic by Sue Stainton. |
