Meet Pulse, a stylish application that makes reading the news fun, organized, and engaging. Pulse takes your favorite websites (including Facebook) and transforms them into a colorful and interactive mosaic. Tap on an article, and you will see a clean and elegant view of the story. Sharing a story via Facebook, Twitter, or email is as easy as two taps. Pulse has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Fortune, BusinessWeek, Techcrunch, and more. Experience Pulse today--you'll never look at news the same way again.
The dashboard layout makes reading and browsing the news easy and helps you streamline your news feed by combining speedy navigation with a sleek user interface. Each news source is organized as a horizontal bar on your screen and each story is displayed as a square on the bar. Simply tap on a block of news, read an article, and tap again to bring up the dashboard and browse more articles.

Swiping to the left and right enables you to select a story from any article with ease. As soon as you're done reading and you've scrolled to the end of the article, your navigation bar appears at the bottom of your screen and you can continue browsing for more new articles from that source. Return to your main page by pressing the back button where a simple swipe of your finger up or down lets you browse through your collection of news sources.
Pulse offers a number of options to customize your personal news feed. Tap into the options page and you'll be able to choose your font size from small to extra large. You can also alter the refresh rate at which new stories populate, turn background updates on or off, and change the frequency of your updates. Log in with Facebook and you can turn your social stream into a news feed for easy viewing.
Once you've opened up an article, you can tap on the menu button to pull up more options. Share the story you've just checked out using Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, and more. Tap on the star symbol to mark the app as starred in Google Reader. If you want to open the article in a browser, or if you want to set a specific source to default to web format for any reason, these options are simply a tap away. From the main page, you can choose to manage your sources to put them in the order you want to read.
If you're in the mood for reading the news but don't necessarily need to be connected to your Wi-Fi or 3G, Pulse provides you the option to peruse your articles offline. Just start up the app with an Internet connection and your articles will load completely for future reading when you're looking to save some battery life and don't need to be online.

Runs perpetually,

CONS:(1) I have a low-end smartphone with limited memory, so I want that memory dedicated to the apps that I am actively using. Having multiple apps running in the background increases my risk of running out of memory and being put in a forced close situation. Once you start "pulse", it runs perpetually in the background updating your feeds. But I don't want this. What I want is for the app to update my feeds when I start it, and then when I'm done reading my feeds, I want to be able to really quit the app. (2) You can't customize the font size of the articles - an important feature for those of us in the bifocal set. I can understand that the font has to be a set size in the overview of all the articles in a folder, but when I select an article so I'm just reading that one, I can't see any reason for not letting me set the font size. (3) Similar to the FlipBook on the iPad, it seems that there is no personal record of which articles I've already read. It always shows the most recent articles. If you are way behind in a feed, you can't access your older, unread items. On the other hand if you'd like to mark even more recent articles "read" so they'll disappear from your reader, this isn't the best choice of apps. PROS: The actual user interface is attractive and intuitive, at least after you have your feeds set up. I suspect it is even more slick to use on a tablet than on a phone which is where I'm using it. ALTERNATE RSS READER I ended up going with "Feedly" because it does allow the user to really quit the app, customize the font size, and mark articles as "read". I don't think it is as pretty as "pulse", but this functionality is more important to me than prettiness.

Its a really pretty app. All of my RSS feeds are in one, clean space that I can quickly check on the go. it does download pictures though, so set your refresh rate accordingly with your data plan.
