Micro Dry dots are constructed from resins that result in an extremely fine edges. Laser dots are formed from toners that usually "powder," forming tiny satellites around the dot itself. Inkjet dots are wet droplets that are absorbed into the paper so that individual dots' sizes increase. The Alps MD-5000 can form variable-size dots from 10 to 40 microns. The Micro Dry printer utilizes a Micro Energy Controller chip that sends precise data to the Micro DOS print-head. It then creates the patterns in units of 10 microns (for 2,400 dpi) to 40 microns (for 600 dpi).
A special water-free dry ink pigment forms a four-layer coating of thin film that is 3 microns in thickness. The resin ink does not permeate the media, but fixes firm on the paper surface. Dots will not smudge, the resin is waterproof and the pigment is fade-proof.

Alps MD Series printer ink cartriges,
By "rsnchz" (San Francisco, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alps 106005-00 Black Ink Cartridge (MD Series Printers) (Office Product)
The Alps thermal transfer cartridges provide a much better media to print photos, t-shirt transfers and for those hobbyist like myself to make our own wet transfer decals. Because of their dry transfer system the image does not run when it is wet and this is the only cartriges that have white as a separate color.
