Editorial Reviews

Already Drowning, a song-cycle inspired by various myths and folktales about female water spirits, marks something of a departure for Aidan Baker. While still retaining his trademark sense of ambience and texture, the tracks on this album are much more structured and song-oriented, embracing a minimalist post-rock, slowcore style and featuring a different guest vocalist on each track. Guest vocalists include: Clara Engel, Jessica Bailiff, Valérie Niederoest and Maude Oswald (of Toboggan), Joanna Kupnicka, Geneviève Castrée (aka Ô Paon), Liz Hysen, and Carla Bozulich (of Evangelista, The Geraldine Fibbers). All words and music written by Aidan Baker (guitars, bass, flute, drums, trombone, piano, and field recordings), vocal melodies and interpretations/translations by respective singers. Additional musicians: Leah Buckareff (of Nadja -- accordion), Laura C. Bates (violin), Nick Storring (of Picastro -- cello), Carl Pace (of Beta Cloud -- trumpet), and Laura Rodie (alto and soprano saxophones).

Wonderful album by Aidan Baker who provides strong instrumental undercurrent around a succession of vocally alluring water fairies. I was unfamiliar with Aidan Baker until i read the Editor's Record Pick of the Month in the June edition of Stereophile and there noticed that the last of the water fairies was Carla Bozulich. The Stereophile article by Stephen Mejias is an interesting discussion of this music and the sonic debate that music such as this finds in the Stereophile community. I do agree with Mr. Mejias that this music is sonically solid and looking for a good stereo. Rhine fairy Carla Bozulich led me to this purchase and amazement that the other water fairies, though all quite different, were of her musical quality. LP format is highly recommended, if you are so inclined, and the LP comes with a FLAC download of the album. MP3 imitators beware, this is how music should be delivered,

1st he invents a new kind of music.

Now he puts female lounge singers up in front of it.

Its dramatic listening to one of his albums for the first time; you just never know what to expect.
