2.0 out of 5 stars Too big and bulky
These are good knee pads but not right for me. I'm a snowboard instructor and need to plop down on the snow repeatedly throughout the day even in icy conditions. My other knee pads do not offer enough protection so I wanted some that were more heavy duty. These are but to use for sports they're just a little on the big side. Beware of the return policy as well as I...

I purchased the Alta Superflex Knee Pads with the non-velcro "Altalok" buckle (featured in the photo).

The packaging states clearly "not intended for athletic applications", but I could see it being used in outdoor sporting activities (the reason for my initial purchase). After adjusting and wearing them, they are quite comfortable. The disclaimer is probably because the cushioning is not as thick as other cushioning found in volleyball or similar knee pads available, but make no mistake: there is comfortable fabric and great padding in these.

The cap is not a super-rigid, plastic material like many skateboarding caps are. They are a sturdy but flexible, hard rubber material with a soft texture to them that provides grip when kneeling down.

The lower strap is made of a tough and durable adjustable Du Pont Cordura (R) strap. The upper strap is made of a flexible elastic strap that gives enough tension to keep the fit around the lower quads/above the knee nice and tight without hindering range of motion when bending at the knee.

The "Altalok" buckle system is simple to use; they slide in and out easily and are designed in such a way to eliminate any accidental loosening of the strap. They pivot on hinge that the buckle hooks around as well, enabling a more comfortable fit.

Overall, I recommend this product to anyone who wants a comfortable, versatile kneepad. Construction workers, paintballers, and airsofters would appreciate the build quality and the comfort of the Alta Superflex Knee Pads.

I understand that these are the same pads that the military uses. After some marathon caving I can understand why. I might not have knees any more if these bad boys weren't there. I also love the rubber caps over hard plastic, stiff fabric, or other alternatives.

These are really sturdy, and very comfortable to wear. I found them to be easy to adjust, and they stay put. I use them primarily for photography: I take a lot of low-angle shots, and my knee takes a beating. So running around with one of these wrapped on my leg all day is not a problem: doesn't slide off, stays put, offers excellent padding/protection and feels comfortable.

Recently I also put them to use on a renovation project. And they held up great.

Generally, the plastic front does scuff up pretty easily, but besides cosmetics it has no effect on the product. They're been used and abused for over a year now, and hold up up just as well as the day I got 'em (just little beat up, that's all, but lots of life left in them). Great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great knee pads! Protect those knees!, February 17, 2011

I love these knee pads. As far as general purpose knee pads these are pretty much perfect. Light weight, comfortable, easy to adjust, plenty of padding but not too much bulk.

I got these to use camping and for general use with yard work etc. I would also include these in my Bug Out Bag. I am very happy with them.

What made me get these is the Altalok securing system. I like that easy fast system but without the noise of velcro. I personally hate how over used velcro is. I like that the top strap is elastic but the lower strap is not. I have only one suggestion for improvement to the makers. That is to actually make a left and right strapped.

The straps are easy to adjust and the kneepad stays over my knees. The straps are easy to clip on and stay snug.

5.0 out of 5 stars for roof work and construction, July 12, 2011

I am not a contractor. I am just an able bodied DIYer. I have replaced my own roof and have built furniture professionally, so I know my way around a job site and shop. These knee pads are exactly what I was looking for. I only wear them when I know I'll need them, but they are easy to wear and comfortable for several hours. I've used them for crawling across joists on my knees without any discomfort what so ever. On staging, on the roof sub-strait, and even on hot shingles. They are not of the non-marring sort, though I never had any issues with leaving steaks where ever I happened to be kneeling. I wasn't looking for non marring, as I wanted the grippy-ness. I will use them again when I replace all my hardwood floors. good product.

4.0 out of 5 stars They Do The Job, March 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Alta Tactical Superflex Knee Pads Black AltaLok (Misc.)
I bought these knee-pads speficically because I spend a lot of time knee-walking on rough terrain as a matter of my job. I needed pads that would hold-up to a lot of abuse, and these definitley do the job; they are very durabe.

The only complaint I have about them is that the straps sometimes slip, and the alta-lock does not always hold and must be re-engaged on occasion. This happens if for example, the locking latch snags a rock, or some other bit of terrain that pulls the latch from the pin. This can sometimes be annoying, but certainly not a deal breaker. I would bet that very few people put these pads through the same paces of daily abuse as I do.

These are the first knee pads that have actually survived over a month of hard labor, I would definitley recommend these to anyone who needs solid, quality knee-pads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable Knee Pads, December 13, 2010

I bought these knee pads to help reduce knee and back pain. These are incredibly easy to use, and comfortable.

I love the AltaLok clips, since they are so easy to use, and stay fastened well. As said by another reviewer, there is an elastic strap, and Cordura strap. The elastic strap is very helpful in comfort, when bending the knee. Another added plus is the gripping of the caps. They don't grip too much, but hold you in place when needed, and glide easily, when pressure is relieved.

I can wear these knee pads/kneel for hours, with minimal pain/strain. I don't know how I worked without these, and am glad that I purchased them. I'd recommend these to anyone who spends a lot of time kneeling down, especially in building trades/equipment installation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect... almost, January 11, 2012

The knee-pads fit well and stay in place. I use them athletically for bike polo, not tactical assault or whatever... who cares. Anyways, the only thing wrong is that I was sent two right knee-pads. Too bad I didn't realize it until after I had put wear on them. The distributor should pay better attention to details like this in the future.

These knee pads are very good. The rubber pads work to prevent sliding and they are very comfortable for the protection they give you.
