Great value, go great with my Mac Mini!, February 11, 2005
This review is from: Altec Lansing VS2120 2-Piece System (Personal Computers)
I am the queen of cheap speakers. I always tend to get the cheesiest, sleaziest speakers. I decided that my new Mac Mini deserved something a *little* better, but I'm still cheap. These speakers are not, I'm sure, high-end, but they are a far cry from the cheapie speakers I usually have. The sound quality is wonderful -- I'm hearing subtle low tones that the cheap speakers didn't pick up, and everthing's smooth and clear. They're easy to set up and very attractive. They are bigger than my Mac Mini (but hey--what isn't?) but don't take up too much space. Very nice indeed, for the price!

Nice sound and look good, February 3, 2005
This review is from: Altec Lansing VS2120 2-Piece System (Personal Computers)
I bought these for a work environment because the dopey looking tan speakers I had did not match my sleek little dell and 20 inch flat panel monitor. In terms of looks they fit in really well and mirror the look of the flat panel display nicely. Keep in mind that the speakers are about 10.5 inches high and 4 wide so they are not what I'd call compact. Important to note about these speakers is that they are powered and are not designed to work with a separate subwoofer. I was a little disappointed about that but I attribute it to my own carelessness. However, the story has a happy ending because I'm fine with the sound as it is. In a work environment it is pretty rare that i had a chance to kick up the sound enough to even activate the subwoofer. At low to low medium sound, these speakers really shine. However, don't expect big deep sound out of these speakers as they are only 5 watts of power total (so only 2.5 per speaker). Also, it is important to play with the sound output of Windows, the program you are using (winamp etc) as well as the knob on the speakers. People suffering with the annoying hiss so common in cheaper speakers can get a lot of relief by taking some time fiddling with these three adjustments. What works for me is low on the Windows output, medium on the program output and low on the speaker knob output.

Excellent Value, January 13, 2005
This review is from: Altec Lansing VS2120 2-Piece System (Personal Computers)
I just replaced my Harman Kardon computer speakers with this pair. Although my old HKs were 12 watts while these are only 5, these ALs actually sound much better. Although they will never be mistaken for quality speakers (I use a pair of $2,500 Polk towers in my music room), they are perfectly adequate as far as computer speakers go. Excellent value.
