For those speaking of 'distortion' and distorted bass- NOT. If you know how to use your setup these are very satisfyingly loud AND clean. TURN DOWN source- PC, Mp3, etc., first. The volume control has a 'Sweet Spot' indicator at 3-O' Clock- Set it there and ease your source levels into it. You get PLENTY of clean Volume- I fill my average size den with sound and can literally 'feel' the low end. I actually have to keep volume in check for housemates.

To Start, try Treble at full, Bass- lowest to 7-O'clock- SET SOURCE EQ's tone to FLAT. No boost/cut on any frequencies. AL hit the mark with the 'balanced' sound they claim. No, it's not 'audiophile perfect' but for this price range, being a picky audiophile myself, I'm completely satisfied with the balance 'as is'- I have yet to add any EQ with any of my sources.

If you have a corner setup you're golden. Placement is KEY with these speakers, especially the Sub. With the Sub on the floor, angled across and pushed all the way back into the corner, speaker/port facing out, like ANY sub, you get the lowest 'felt' lows, resonance, and smoothest bass punch/tone- And Yes, the sub produces NICE bass TONES, not just muddy boom. (At the very least put sub on floor, against a wall, speaker/port facing out)

Speaking of low end. For this price range I was blown away. Some say it's a too 'bass heavy' system- yes, the low end is VERY strong and in your face (hence try Bass knob setting- no more than 7-O'clock with FLAT source settings to start) but not unreasonably so. With the floor/corner placement you need no bass boost on source components. It kicks and punches. It's MUCH EASIER to dial down low end, than to not have enough 'true' bass to start with, trying to add 'false' bass with EQ and distorting the sub.

I was hesitant at first about ordering these speakers with some of the negative reviews on Amazon. Now that I've owned this set for a few weeks, I have no idea what those people were talking about. I'm a bit of an audiophile, I love music and I've set up several home theatre and music systems for both myself and others, so I have a bit of experience listening to sound. Nothing super high end or ridiculously expensive, but decent stuff. And, I love these speakers. The high end is crisp and clear, the mid-range is full, and the bass is strong but not over powering. The separate bass and treble controls are nice. Some people complain about there not being a sub woofer volume nob, but I can't imagine that one of those would do anything different than the bass knob on the speaker. I was surprised to see that there are 7 speaker cones in these speakers (two tweeters and one midrange speaker in each left/right speaker, and the sub woofer), and you can hear the quality in the sound.
One almost-gripe I have is that I would have preferred a headphone jack on the right speaker over an aux in. I guess it's nice for people who want to listen to an MP3 player or something, but these are plugged into my computer where I play all the music in my office, so I don't see any reason to plug anything into the aux jack. That's just me though.
Overall, I love these speakers. I would totally buy them again or recommend them to a friend.

Update: after having owned these speakers for a few weeks, I think I have discovered why there is such a "love 'em or hate 'em" attitude towards these speakers. When I first got them, I was visiting family for the holidays and they sounded great in my temporary set up.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Altec Lansing Octane 7 bills itself as a small compact unit with thunderous bass; it's small and compact, but the bass leaves a bit to be desired.

PACKAGING: The system comes in a lightweight ~ 27.5-lb box, with a subwoofer, left and right speaker towers, a warranty booklet, and all cables necessary for setup. Minus the box and packaging, the speakers weigh just 12.5 lbs. There is no instruction manual; the instructions are printed directly on the box flap, so don't throw that box away! (although speaker setup is self-explanatory). Setup took all of 30 seconds to finish.

OVERALL DESIGN: I was immediately impressed by the slender design of the left and right speakers. The speakers each have a vertical tower upper portion, which flares downwards into a circular conical shaped bottom which houses various speaker drivers. It's a clean, compact design, which fits well on my small desk. The left speaker is the main control unit, which houses a sub-woofer cable connection, a main volume control button with power on/off light, separate treble/bass control knobs, and an auxiliary input. The volume/treble/bass knobs have a small, almost invisible ridge indicating dial position. The subwoofer itself also has a power button; the two power buttons seem redundant, but it's convenient to have an extra power button within easy reach on the left speaker. The left/right speakers are made of a solid matte plastic that does not retain fingerprints, and the conical shape gives them a steady base that is unlikely to tip over. The speaker grille is a hard mesh that allows 180 degree output. The overall build quality seems excellent.

SOUND: How does it sound? Bear in mind, this is a small system.
