5.0 out of 5 stars Great gaming speakers
This system is powerful (especially the subwoofer), looks cool, and sounds great. It's even got dual headphone jacks in the wired controller, which is very handy.

I wish they'd added Dolby Digital support (instead of Dolby Pro Logic), but I know that costs big bucks in royalties, and they'd have to have cut corners big time on the sound to hit this price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not a deal at all.
If you need something a bit better than the integrated speakers in your TV, get these. I don't know if I was unlucky, or all the rear right speakers are simply nonworking. It wouldn't produce the same sound as the left one (left rear speaker is 10 times better in sound quality). I thought about exchnaging at least. Still, I don't spend $100 for a 200W home theater, so...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Speaker after some modding :), February 11, 2005
This review is from: Altec Lansing XA3051 5.1 Speakers (6-Speaker, Black & Silver) (Personal Computers)
Well this set of speaker sounds better then my old 4.1 Altec Lansing speakers.
At first I was disappointed that it was simulated 5.1 sound but luckily I have some electronic knowledge so I opened it up and started mapping it out, I managed to add separate inputs for each speaker which sounds awesome on my audigy soundcard. (Takes to much time and extra components)

I wouldn't really recommend this to computer users or someone wanting to build a true entertainment center, but it is adequate for console gaming and normal TV viewing purposes.

4.0 out of 5 stars great 4 price...2 flaws, February 10, 2005

This review is from: Altec Lansing XA3051 5.1 Speakers (6-Speaker, Black & Silver) (Personal Computers)
these sound pretty good for the money. pretty bassy..better in that respect than most out there..again, esp. for the money. some other reviews say they are simulated surround, etc. but they are as advertised a pro logic system. not dolby digital (5 totally seperate channels + bass signal to the sub) there are only 2 problems. there is always a hiss, not too noticeable, but there, whenever is plugged in. only solutions are to either unplug it or plug in cheap headphones into the wired remote control and unplug them when you want to use it. the other flaw is in the volume control. it has an electronic volume dial that controls other settings as well. problem is that on volume, the incerements are way to big...either that or there is a problem with mine. (if anyone else's is like this, post here) on mine, the volume only goes up or down every 2 clicks of the wheel, not each click. and then when it does, its too much, it's not a problem during the day usually when it doesn't matter, but i live in an apartment and its hard to find the right volume where i can hear it but the room mates/neighbors can't.

Oh, and the hissing sound is there all the time, even when powered off. You get what you pay for ( or a bit worse).

The sound quality is pretty clear and good enough for an apartment. Except the hissing sound of the speakers when power turned off and the wired remote, I am satisfied with everything else. Good deal and at amazon just 40 bucks.

1.0 out of 5 stars False advertising: it's 2.0 not 5.1, January 30, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Altec Lansing XA3051 5.1 Speakers (6-Speaker, Black & Silver) (Personal Computers)
Very disappointed. As others have noted, this is NOT a 5.1 system, as normally meant by "5.1 system" - which is 6 discrete (separate) channels. Instead it's just stereo, or 2.0. Sure it has 6 speakers, including a sub, but it does not take 5.1 input, but only stereo input, so your 5.1 sound card is not put to good use. It's simulated surround (derived from stereo signal) sent to rear speakers. Also hisses when off.

I bought these speakers. I thought they were 5.1 speakers but there is only stereo input. How can you call this 5.1 without input for more than right and left channel??

For me this was a disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, great look, January 1, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Altec Lansing XA3051 5.1 Speakers (6-Speaker, Black & Silver) (Personal Computers)
These speakers look cool and sound great, all at a decent price. I did think the grids on the speakers were metal, based on the photos here, but they're actually a silver plastic. I was dissapointed at first, but after listening to the speakers I've learned to love them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Cheap And Very Powerful 5.1 Home Theater System!, August 5, 2004

This review is from: Altec Lansing XA3051 5.1 Speakers (6-Speaker, Black & Silver) (Personal Computers)
Considering I have been on A big buget lately,I haven't had time or the money to comeplete my Home Theater.I had already bought a 46 inch HDTV,a large Home Entertainment System to put in in,a DVD player and a VCR,and a old Dolby Pro Logic system. However, there was one thing missing to have a true complete Home Theater.A Good Surround Sound System!Unfortunently,I couldn't afford the Big fancy Digital 5.1 Systems,so I went with this instead. What we have here is The XA3051.This System is Killer! It features 100 watts,6 Speakers,Two modes{Stereo and Surround},Dual Headphone Jacks, and one hell Of a Subwoofer. It connects easily to any TV,Gaming system,DVD Player, and VCR.Remember that Dolby Surround Feature that you saw in the Audio settings on your XBox?That's what I'm talking about! One of the most annoying things about this system,However,is the controller. It isn't wireless! However upon closer inspection I discovered the reason why.The controller features two built in Headphone jacks! Now you and a friend can listen to explosive surround sound without getting the cops called on ya.Just be ready to accept the fact that you'll be deaf after just 2 weeks of this. You have been warned!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best value between $100 and $200, March 14, 2009
This review is from: Altec Lansing XA3051 5.1 Speakers (6-Speaker, Black & Silver) (Personal Computers)
I bought these about 5 years ago, and just finally upgraded. I bought them for $200 brand new, and they were an incredible value. The tuner is built right into the sub, so you don't have to buy an external. It kinda sucks having a hard wired controller, but it works very well. Limited controls (only volume, bass, and treble), but it still sounds great. The sub is small, but has great air flow and packs a punch, what we'd call a "sleeper" sub woofer (that is, it produces more bass than it looks like, not that you would sleep through it!).
