A Good Speaker, But Has Durability Issues,
By
This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM5 Portable Audio System for iPod (White) (Electronics)
Overall, this is a great speaker system. Bass is strong for its size, midtones are good, and there is excellent treble. The speakers work better with my iPod, rather than other things connected via the AUX IN jack (ie CD player and other mp3 players). I think it might optimize the equalizer for the speakers on the iPod, because the bass does not sound as distorted and the high notes are crisper with the iPod as opposed to another player. I like the ability to attach other devices and a subwoofer to these too. However, they are not the most rugged speakers. I took them to the beach on vacation, and just from the salt in the air, the mesh on the speakers began to corrode and now I have brown speckles all over my speakers. Also, I think because I live in Colorado and the air is so dry, the rubber grips on the bottom and the rubber flap that covers the ports on the back are beginning to dry out and crumble. Otherwise, they are great speakers.

I already had the bose speakers that cost me many times more than these speakers did. Nevertheless, I am comparing these speakers with Bose speakers. I am wondering why I ever bought the Bose speakers. These speakers deliver the same quality of sound at fraction of the price! I read the reviews but did not believe that these speakers could be that good, but they are. If you have plenty of money to throw around, sure go ahead and buy the Bose speakers, but if you are a bit careful about your money then these speakers will satisfy you just the same. Do note that I am a Bose fan. I have plenty of Bose products that I have bought over the years, but for iPod speakers I recommend these speakers.

I have had mine for 15 months, and it is going downhill fast. It interjects popping sounds. I have done many tests to isolate the source and it is definitely the Altec device. So, now 15 months later, I have to throw it out.

Great for the office!,

This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM5 Portable Audio System for iPod (White) (Electronics)
I purchased this speaker system for my office, and it's perfect. It's very compact and comes with a carrying case and international plugs. You can plug it in or use batteries to take it anywhere. The sound is great, although I have not turned it up too loud, as my coworkers would not like that! I also love the fact that it charges your iPod.
In case anyone is wondering, it IS compatible with the 2nd generation iPod.

Great all-around speakers for iPod,

HIGHLY recommended!
I purchased these speakers so I could carry them to and from work in my backpack to allow listening to my iPod at work. I was quite surprised with how elaborate the setup is: * comes with a very nice non-descript black bag that is lined with a soft layer on the inside and perfectly sized compartments for each of the components (speakers, power cord, etc), and the bag with everything in it fits very easily in my backpack, or can be carried by itself. * little 'tray' that iPod sits in folds back into speakers making unit snagless and VERY small * speakers can either be powered by AC adaptor or batteries. * sound is can be turned up MUCH louder than my buddy's speakers which are much larger and cost much more. Sound is VERY good for such a small unit * also has component output for video (I've yet to use that), a subwoofer output for subwoofer purchased separately, and aux input * has iPod connector in back to hook up iPod to computer while still plugged into speakers So because these sound so great and the unit is SO small, I've found many more uses for it... in the bathroom while showering, in the garage while working on the car...

Altec Portable speaker,

This was much smaller than I anticipated. I am, however , very pleased with the portability of this speaker and the quality of sound it produces. It has both battery and AC power which is great. It works perfect with my NANO. I love that it charges while it plays however I have had some problem initiating play when the Nano is not fully charged.

I really hate negative reviews. They sort of bring me down. This review is intended to help others avoid the mistake I made.
Let me start by saying that the concept of this product really is excellent in that it can not only accept audio from your iPod but also any output jack (meaning such things as your computer or a third music source such as a CD player, etc.) The really great feature is that you can connect your iPod via USB and thus sync your iPod to iTunes. My expectation was thus: I would have a set of speakers for my computer (check), a docking station for my iPod (check) and the ability to sync it to my iTunes library via the USB cable (check). The icing is that I could put batteries in it and take it to the beach. KEWEL !!! I am giving this piece of tapioca to a charity very soon. Here's why. First, there are no volume knobs. What you are given are push buttons (that are embedded in a rubber pad) that you cannot easily see and must press (and hold ... and listen) in order to change the volume to a desired setting. It (the volume) cannot thus be pre set visually as is the case with conventional volume knobs. This seems to be a very dumb design...did they actually make this for humans? And just who was the engineer that came up with this design (not to mention the management genius that approved it)? The sound quality is so poor it will make your ears pop; Aside from what seems like zero base and an overall tinny quality I got a very excellent snap, crackle and pop (continuously) and could not wait to get this wonderful piece of modern engineering disconnected from my system. Happy camper? NOT !!! So let's be reasonable: It is possible my computer system is uniquely unsuited to the electronics in this product? Certainly it is possible, but given the quality of my system and sound card in it, I calculate the probability of that to be very low. I have since resoved the issue by adding an Apple docking pad and a set of REAL speakers. I can't take em to the beach but I sure enjoy the sound of The Eagles on my I tunes now. I love good quality. I love careful design (for people) and I seek the opportunity to praise it when it is there. Correspondingly, (not my quote) ... the bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price if forgotton. It's your money, spend it wisely

I bought these speakers for a cruise I went on not sure about power supply on a cruise ship. (it turned out to be 110 VAC) But the im5 came with everything but a backup generator. It has several adaptors for different voltages as well as battery power (which lasted longer than I expected) and oh yeah, great sound. The only thing missing is a remote. But it is a nice little package and very portable. I'm planning a trip to europe next year and the im5 will be there. It sounds good in my office too.

Great for travel, and for the office,

This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM5 Portable Audio System for iPod (White) (Electronics)
I love this little speaker system and now have one in the office and one at home for moving around the apartment and for travelling. It is small and compact, and comes with international plugs so you can take it around the world. Having the plugs is critical - you don't want to have to worry about batteries when travelling - but it does mean that, eg, you can't take this system as easily to the beach. The sound is good enough (you're never going to get great sound with travel speakers), and it fantastically charges your ipod while you listen to music, which is great. My biggest complaint is that the audio re-sets to a default (and quite loud) level every time you turn it on or off, so you just have to remember to turn the volume down at work before you hit play. Definitely worth buying tho.
