Good sound quality in a compact and attractive unit....,

This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM500 Speaker System for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Black) (Electronics)
This is a relatively inexpensive speaker solution for the iPod nano that delivers very good sound quality at this price point. The bass is good and the high frequencies are relatively clear. I am a musician and pretty fussy about my stereo equipment and for a small room I find that this is an adequate solution without overkill. This unit is also attractice and modern looking. It looks particularly good with a black iPod, but would look OK with any color. I shopped around a lot for products to go with my iPod. In general, I found that ALTEC LANSING delivers superior sound at a lot of different price points, so I would consider their products for the nano seriously along with the other solutions that are available.

Much Better than I Expected,
This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM500 Speaker System for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Black) (Electronics)
This very compact speaker system is amazing. I bought it for for travel when I don't want to use earphones as I'm moving around the hotel room. The unit is extremely compact and THIN. It can easily slip into a (nearly full) briefcase, and it is specifically made for the Nano.
In this context, I normally listen to light classical, chamber music, and some new age. For this music the sound is very full, balanced, and pleasing. I am a recreational woodwind player, and I especially like the clarity and character of the sound overall. I suspect that it may not be good for rock music with a heavy rhythm track, pipe organ, or other music with lots of bass. The volume is ample for my use is fairly quiet environments, but a larger and more powerful unit may be better in very noisy situations. For my use, this speaker system is essentially perfect.

The is a great compact iPod player for a work desktop. It is very slim and takes up only a small place on my desk with great sound. It is also nice that it can run off batteries as well and can be taken on an outing in its own travel case.

Altec Lansing IM500,

I purchased an IM500 to try it out, because no one had any of these units open at a store to listen to except Circuit City & they could not find the power supply for the thing. They also would not open a pack of AAA batteries to show me how it sounded, and they wonder why people buy stuff like this online.
After taking the IM500 home, I was pleasantly surprised by the very good sound & amazing volume put out by the unit. Its about a half-inch thick & is ideal for use on a desk or cranenza. The sound quality is very clear & nicely balanced. No, it does not have a lot of bass, but what does at this size and power level. It looks very cool with my black iPOD Nano. It came with a nice soft protective case to cary it around with. If you are looking for an excellent sounding small speaker system for a desk, kitchen or other similar area, you will likely be very pleased withe the IM500. Its a very nice unit & the size makes it super easy to take with you.

The Altec Lansing inMotion IM500 Portable Audio System for iPod is perfect for my needs for a small (it's really tiny), powerful iPod (and other audio) speaker system. It's battery powered (you can use 6 rechargeable or regular alkaline AAA batteries), or you can opt for the included AC adapter.
Sound is phenomenal, and I can use this with the 2G Nano OR with the new 3G Nano with video OR the new iPod Touch with video! You can listen to music or watch a video with full audio while it's docked. Granted, the 3G nano screen is small, but since Apple has packed the screen with over 160 pixels per inch, it's amazingly viewable at close range. You could also theoretically watch videos on the Touch, but you have to turn the IM500 on its side for that. It works but is awkward and doesn't stand up on its own. The unit comes with an audio plug which allows you to connect other MP3 players or gadgets. I can also use this with a 2G iPod Shuffle as well as a Sirius Stiletto 100 portable Satellite Radio (using high-quality WiFi streaming mode) to create a totally portable Satellite Radio speaker system! Very cool!

I just purchased this unit and so far I'm very pleased. The sound is amazing for how small the unit is. It's very portable and I look forward to traveling with it. I haven't tried it with batteries yet. Purchased it for my desk at work. I'm very happy with the look, sound and portability of this speaker system.

Nice sound for the money,

Nice product, I also own the second generation IM600 which is absoulutly outstanding. I use this one at work in my locker while dressing or in the shower. Ease of use is okay but like I said the IM600 with the remote makes it so much nicer to use. Having to manipulate the ipod to change a song or playlist can be a drag because sometimes the unit plays the same song you originally changed from even though your ipod is set on a diffrent song. For the money if you are looking for a speaker system for the office, this is cool for the locker room, maybe for a desk job. But if you really want great sound and ease of use, splurge for the IM600.

Great sound for your iPod Nano, very reliable, great price,

I've owned the IM500 for over a year and it is much more than a great iPod Nano amplifier. Sure, I use it for my iPod but the AUX input jack also makes it a great speaker system for your laptop computer. It folds down flat and fits perfectly in my laptop case. So whenever I'm on the road, this is the sound system I use for DVD movies, Internet gaming, or iPod play in my hotel room. The sound is wonderful with built-in bass boosting, and it's always worked like a champ.
I read the Amazon review by the person who said their iPod "fried" when they first plugged it into this unit. That seems very unlikely to me. How would a power surge get past the IM500's AC transformer? I suspect that was a defective iPod about to die when they plugged it in. Ignore the rest, this is best Nano dock for the price, and perfect for your laptop computer too.

This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM500 Speaker System for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Black) (Electronics)
Bought this unit for the express purpose of having music available in the hotel room when traveling. For portability it can't be beat: about the size of a thin travel guide and packs easily in a backpack or suitcase. Sound is quite appealing for its size and purpose. Impressive bass, good clarity. Overall I would highly recommend this product. Only complaint (kind of anal but I'm an engineer) is the 2G Nano does not fit properly on the unit. The 2G connector is offset an additional 0.125 inches or so causing the iPod to sit off center in the unit's recessed area. Does not affect performance, just looks like a poor design.

Great while it worked,
This review is from: Altec Lansing inMotion iM500 Speaker System for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Black) (Electronics)
I have had this speaker set for three years and its always worked great until recently. It was completely compatible with my 1st gen nano and my 1st gen iPod Touch. A few days ago I accidentally gave the unit a few static shocks which have caused the power indicator light not to shut off and the sound quality to decreas. The bass is now tinny most of the time except when it randomly cuts in to its true bass potential and the sound is somewhat more staticy than it used to be. I am considering buying a replacement since it is such a nice looking and sounding unit but I'll likely upgrade to something better for my iPod Touch.
