Alter Eco Unrefined Cane Sugar is naturally moist and has a rich taste with hints of vanilla. The sugar crystals are enveloped in a thick coat of molasses and are loaded with the richness of unrefined nutrients and minerals. Unrefined cane sugar is a natural source of energy. The farmers of the Alter Trade Foundation in the Philippines harvest the sugar cane. It is then crushed and the cane juice is extracted using traditional methods at the Alter Trade sugar mill on the island of Negros. The result of this traditional process is an unrefined golden-brown organic sugar. Purchase of this product directly supports the 400 farmers of the Alter Trade Foundation. Small growers with an average cultivated area of 0.9 hectare, they work the land communally in order to increase their productivity and revenue. The fair trade premium ensures them a fair price for their harvest so they can provide for their families and take care of their land, ensuring the quality of all future produce. Alter Eco takes fair trade a step further by supplementing the fair trade minimum revenue paid to farmers with an additional premium paid to their cooperative. The Alter Trade Foundation is part of the Alter Trade Group who have invested in a transformation factory. Small producers have access to this facility and are thus able to export directly without having to rely on costly middlemen. The Alter Eco Development Premium also goes towards communal programs which benefit whole farming communities. Its great to be able to get sugar this way.Its not good to eat but if you are going to use sugar at least this is not processed to an unhealthy state on top of what sugar does to your body,and i am helping the fair trade farmers.It is a good thing all around.I am happy i can get it in Amazon.
