5.0 out of 5 stars Clever, witty, and highly recommended
Amanda Lear is one of the most talented lyricists and under rated artists to emerge during the late 70's disco era. Unlike her contemporaries there was always evidence of a higher intelligence at play in her work. Amanda Lear is one of the most talented lyricists and under rated artists to emerge during the late 70's disco era. Unlike her contemporaries there was always evidence of a higher intelligence at play in her work. And while all those wailing one note disco queens have long gone - Amanda remains around recording wonderful (albeit rarely) albums such as this. Sure some of the songs are instantly disposable (Angel Love, Muscle Man) but they remain the minority. Its clever, its witty, and its danceable - Highly recommended. Now if only a major record company would recognise the genius of Lear and get her to record more frequently....

5.0 out of 5 stars Kitsch disco rules!, November 19, 1998
This review is from: Alter Ego (Audio CD)
Amanda Lear has produced some of the most hilarious disco tracks of the last 20 years, and this is a real return to form. The music is typical Euro-cheese, and La Lear delivers the vocals in such a world-weary tone that it sounds, sometimes, as if she couldn't even be bothered to turn up at the studio and just phoned her performance in from an airport waiting loung. Don't let this put you off! It's weirdly effective. Some of the songs are low-camp gay disco, lyrics about go-go boys & muscle queens; others strive for seriousness. There's even a love song to Amanda's mentor, Salvador Dali. All this and a marvellous self-portrait on the cover. Amanda: you rule.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent dance album! Definite camp must-have!, November 3, 2002

Overnight sensations have come and gone, but Amanda Lear has had an amazing and well-deserved staying power that she only boosted with the incredible underground dance album "Cadavrexquis" featuring the fabulous hit single "Fantasy" in 1993. She followed it up with "Alter Ego" which was a lighter, more straight-forward europop album ... and it's great fun from beginning to end! The opening single "Every Time You Touch Me", despite being a sultry dance track, didn't catch as much attention as the hi-NRG dance tracks "Angel Love" and "Peep!" that followed as singles. Amanda's lyrics are just as great as on her classic 70s disco albums, her praise of "Muscle Man" and "Go Go Boy" (When I say go, you must take it off!) are obviously aimed for her huge gay fans - they're pure fun! Other great moments are her song for Salvador Dalí who was her muse since 1965 - Amanda is an acclaimed painter (Unfortunately her original self-portrait wasn't used for this re-issue!), the tear-jerkin' "I Miss You", and "Rien Ne Va Plus" which is another of those great dance tracks. A hat-full of stars to Amanda for this album ...

Wow, after so many years in the music business, this queen of pop & Disco never fails to stretch herself to the limits for her fans all over the world.

She seems to be tireless, and always fresh.
I'm very glad that Amanda stays with her audience, and what they like, and she knows what her audience likes!

A big BRAVO !

5.0 out of 5 stars Europes dance queen in top form, March 31, 1999

Another great album from Europes Dance diva. Not as good as her previous outing in 93 with the same producer Cadavre Exquise which yielded the smash hit 'Fantasy' but a great return to form for La Lear. As with her earlier work the tracks which are the most effective are those that strive for seriousness ON THE AIR TONIGHT; RIEN NA VA PLUS; DALI'S SONG and I'LL MISS YOU; for the rest its highly effective euro disco (with a few tracks especially for her legions of gay fans Muscle Man; Go Go Boy etc.) A definate must for any Lear fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful come back for Ms. Lear, September 12, 1999
By
This review is from: Alter Ego (Audio CD)
After years of low profile, Italian produced albums and songs, Amanda Lear has released a wonderfully exhilarating Cd. "When you feel depressed, when you're in a mess" - as she sang in an old success of hers - you just need to listen to "Alter Ego", and it "will pick you up, if you're feeling down". Amanda doesn't pretend anymore that she can sing: she just sort of speaks or hums her lyrics, but you can't but love her camp rendition of these dance tunes. Some songs are so absurd that you must be laughing - but Ms. Lear was laughing too, when she recorded them. "Go go boy", "Muscle man" are too much to resist! Amanda, please come back again and give us an "Alter Ego 2". You don't want to sing any longer? "I think you're delirious, you'd better lie down".
