This book was a very nice read! I started it and finished it within 5-6 hours. It was easy to read and I liked all the characters. I am sure you won't be disappointed with this book. I'll be passing it on to all my friends and family. Well done Shawnda!

This was a great book. I originally bought it for my daughter but ended up reading it first.
I can't wait for the next book to be released.

I can honestly say that if I haven't received a review request by Shawnda Currie I would have never read Altered - Revelations of the Evolved. The cover is too plain and it would have never gotten my attention. It's a shame because hiding beside an ugly cover is a decent young adult paranormal novel that I think will be interesting for the fans of that genre.

Altered - Revelations of the Evolved has a lot of unexpected moments and twists, that is, if you haven't read the summary. Since the summary is literally the whole book. I kept waiting for something else to happen but all major twists in story are already told there. I hate it when summaries are too spoilerish, it really kills the tension in the story.

Lacey is introduced to us as a very interesting and unusual character. After all, she is on her way to juvenile detention center. But as the story progressed I just could not connect to Lacey. She suffered from Cinderella complex and had some very unfortunate statements that to me sounded like slut-shaming:
"My cheeks blushed as a fantasy danced in my head of my lips pressing against him. What was wrong with me? I wasn't a harlot who searched for guys to randomly hook up with, especially in a place like this."

Everything came too easy for Lacey. She was The One. She knew how to use her awesome psychic skills without much practice. Romance was too instant for my taste too. I would have liked to see her working harder to achieve this.

Also, I didn't approve of the 'Robin Hood' philosophy Lacey's friends promoted and she accepted without second thought. Stealing from corrupt corporations who didn't earn that money the honest way is still stealing and no higher cause can justify that action.

I love time travel books if they are written well. It's irritating when there are plot holes that make the time difference unbelievable. However, that is NOT the case with Altered. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the world that Currie built.

Lacey is just your average teenager, she makes mistakes. She's human. When she finally makes one mistake too many, she's sent to a juvenile facility in the mountains, Clear Waters. It's not all as it appeared in the brochure, but Lacey takes the hand that is dealt to her and tries to fit in. She makes some new friends and a cute boy named Taylor.

Taylor and she become quick friends and a romance begins to bud, but it takes a backseat to their escape plans. He convinces her that she has other abilities and explains that he is from the future. He tries to teach her own to use her abilities, as those in his time, those with the abilities are called Altered. He and his friends have traveled through time on a mission to change the past so that a world war doesn't break out in the future. Lacey's life has taken a complete change - she just needs to realize who she is and how she fits into everything.

Altered is a fast-paced adventure with complex characters with a solid plot. I was intrigued on how Currie spun her web and captured me in her tale without me even knowing it. A great young adult adventure that I'd recommend to anyone. I can't wait to read volume two and continue the adventure with Lacey and friends!

The book cover does not suit this book well. The tranquil mountain scene - intended to portray a sense of Clear Water's isolated location - does not really reflect the contents of this exciting book. There is little there to entice the potential reader, or alert them to the fact that the book is action-packed, visionary in scope, and suspenseful. The method employed for time travel is quite original - I loved the way the author explains it all, and found that to be exceptionally intriguing, and even believable.

Lacey seemed a little too lackadaisical to me. I wanted her to be gutsier - mainly because she has such an important role to play in the upcoming confrontation. Taylor and the other travelers seemed a little plastic; I wanted more personality, and maybe a few distinctive quirks or something that they carry back with them from the future. Some of the conversations seemed slightly off-key or forced to me; part of that I chalked up to time differences, but still....

The overall concept is fabulous; unfortunately, some of the methods used to achieve the necessary goals were highly suspect and bothered me - causing my personal moral compass to swing wildly out of control.

I am looking forward to the next book in this planned series as I am sure the characters will gain additional depth and the world-building will continue to gain momentum and broaden in scope.

This book was given to me by the author in exchange for my honest review.
