5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Thrift Shop Clothing
I bought this book along with some other sewing books a few years ago when I was teaching myself to sew and totally ignored this book. It doesn't have glossy photos and a flashy title, but is chock full of good advice.

2.0 out of 5 stars too over priced!
I'm a professional tailor, but I didn't sew to much for a decade, so I check that book in my friend library to refresh some information. It is good book, but the price shocked me! I don't think the price is equivalent for amount and quality of information that includes. Especially, there so much more in the internet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Thrift Shop Clothing, January 30, 2009
This review is from: Altering Women's Ready to Wear (Paperback)
I bought this book along with some other sewing books a few years ago when I was teaching myself to sew and totally ignored this book. It doesn't have glossy photos and a flashy title, but is chock full of good advice.

Fast forward to today's tough economy and this book has become so helpful. I have been losing weight and not wanting to shop for a new wardrobe for each size I drop. So I have been taking in some of my clothes and altering clothes that I bought at thrift shops.

This book is full of illustrations that shows various fitting problems with the solutions. For instance, the illustration will show wrinkles in a garment, then another illustrations show where the clothing needs to be taken in or out to get the proper fit. Even the best suit your money can buy won't look good if it has a bad fit.

The book also discusses what to look for when shopping and what makes a garment a good candidate for altering. The book is written for people looking to start an alterations business, so it does assume some basic sewing skills, so be forwarned on that. What the book offers is where to add a dart, where to sew to change slacks from a wide to narrow leg, how to shorten the sleeve on a blouse or make the shoulders smaller on a blouse or jacket. It also shows how to rework and out-of-date collar into something more appropriate for current styles and how to repair a zipper and properly hem pants and skirts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Available for lower cost elsewhere, March 17, 2011

Amazon is a *great* place to find discounted prices. However with this particular book that was not the case. The author's site sells it new for $19.95. The contrast was extreme. That said, I remain a loyal customer (who will faithfully comparison shop more often) and applaud Amazon for having the book available at all.

THIS BOOK IS JUST WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR. I HAVE ALMOST NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PURCHASE A GARMET AND HAVE IT FIT CORRECTLY. I'M A PETITE, MOST READY MADE CLOTHING IS EITHER TO SMALL OR TO LARGE. SINCE I HAVE VERY LITTLE TIME OR SPACE FOR SEWING THIS WILL HELP ME TO DO ALTERATIONS ON SELECT ITEMS AN BUILD A SUITABLE WARDOBE WITH LESS EXPENSE AND LESS SHOPPING. HAVE ONLY USED A LITTLE AT PRESENT BUT HAVE READ ENOUGH TO KNOW HOW VALUABLE THIS WILL BE TO ME.

Just bought this book at Sew True for $19.99.
Am anxiously waiting for it to arrive.
In this economy altering my own clothes
will save me a lot of money.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book, February 16, 2011

The book I ordered was as indicated although the cover was not the same as pictured. The content was still the same and in good condition for being such an odd book. I am pleased I ordered a used book as opposed to a new one as that certainly saved me $.
