This product is a nice middle ground between the Alterna hair mud and the hair concrete. The mud leaves a better shine, but doesn't hold as well. The concrete holds very well, but leaves hair pretty dull looking. This product is great for getting lift at the roots of longer hair and for spiking or sculpting shorter hair. It smells nice with just a hint of pineapple.

I've used modeling clay for my hair over the past 5 or so years. Every time I find one that I like they end up discontinuing it. I prefer a clay that has medium hold so that I can re-style it throughout the day. I have shorter hair and do very minimal styling. If one needs a strong hold, this stuff probably won't work out too well.My main preference is that the clay leave a dryer look, so that it does not leave the hair looking wet and 'greasy'. Alterna Hemp Modeling clay has good hold and looks great. It smells fantastic as well-- like fruit. It's also very easy to wash off the hands. I like this so much, that I've subscribed to receive it every 2 months. I use about a 'quarter-sized' gob each day and a jar lasts about 2 months. I hope they don't cancel it!

I have short, very fine hair. I typically have used wax-based products, which have worked well for my hair type. I was expecting it to have a consistency of wax based on the description of "clay," but it's consistency is more akin to lotion. That being said, it is nice for adding a little texture to your hair. I will say the hold is not strong enough to put my hair into a messy short faux-hawk like I normally do. If it isn't strong enough to be able to spike my hair, I don't think it'll be able to hold anyone's hair up, haha. I typically just use it to mess my hair up a little, but I have to then add hair spray to get it to stay that way.I actually quite like the melon smell, and it doesn't leave any white residue in my hair, which is nice.
