I have transitioned from a chemical relaxer to virgin hair I like the idea of no chemicals going into my scalp. I work in the business world so I have to be cautious on how I do my hair. So I go to a dominican shop for a wash and set then blowout. The hairdresser tells me about keratin to soften my curl without a relaxer I ask how much it cost and she says the treatment cost 100 dollars (Whew). So I go home and online to see if I can get a organic product that would do the same thing. I ran across Alterna Hemp with Organics Straightening Balm. The next week I take it to the dominican shop she does a wash and set once we took the rollers set out we added the Alterna to my dry hair before she blew it out. Oh my god my hair was straight as usual with a blow out but the surprising thing is my hair has not puffed up and its been a week. We all know with virgin hair your hair do not stay straight that long so five stars for this straightening balm. Straightens without weighing down, reduces friz, smells good. Also helps reduce friz for wavy hair when applied to wet hair without straightening/styling and allowing it to air-dry.

I have always liked the Phyto straightening balm but have felt it is overpriced for what it is. I tried this Alterna product and am switching to it. It works just as well for me on reducing frizziness and generally smoothing my hair, and costs less.

I agree that it is very pricey, but then again there's that classic saying, "you get what you pay for" and thats usually the case more often than not. I don't own it myself, but I have used it. The first time my stylist used it on me (how I found out about it). She did exactly as the instructions indicated above. And my hair was ridicuously straight once she straightened it. Yes I know that a professional was using it so of course it looked good. But really, the only difference from her using it on me and me using it on myself is that she can see my head evenly from all angles and is taking her time. All you need is the time and patience to properly follow the instructions to gain maximum look (if your hair is abundant and as thick as mine). If you are in a hurry, or are lazy, this probably isn't for you since you more than likely not be getting your full results unless you know how to style hair quickly and effeciantly. If your are drying your hair in layers from the bottom up, you shouldn't be having a problem.
Unless you have exhausted all your options to tame your hair, I'd suggest just sticking to something cheaper since you could still get similar results if you can find the right brand.

This product is great for thick hair that frizzes. It gives a great soft sleek look to the hair.

The product came within about a week. The pump was taped securely and the bottle placed in popcorn, to prevent leaks and damage. Even with shipping, the total was under $20, about the cost of the 5 oz size at most retailers (online and off). This is the only straightening product that resists humidity on my biracial (varying from fine and straight, wavy and medium to coarse coils).

I ran out after 2 years, so I was desperate to get it replaced quickly. Hooray for finding a reliable, economical source for one of my must-have hair products.

I ordered this as I've purchased it from my salon previously and often have difficulty finding it. Its a great product, and does exactly what it claims to do: straighten hair while drying it without frizz. I highly reccomend the product; the only issue is with the dispenser, which is not a tube as shown, but a bottle with a pump, which often sticks. Otherwise, a great product.

Although this is product is a staightening Balm...I find it works wonders on my natural curly hair. My hair is smooth...no frizz...no fly aways. And when I do straighten my hair...it is amazingly straight and super shiny!

I purchased the Alterna Hemp Straightening Balm about two weeks ago and it arrived in a timely manner. That's about the only positive thing I can say unfortunately.

I have very thick wavy hair. And using as directed this product leaves much to be desired. Did not help with straightening at all. It also did not help with the frizziness or fly-away hairs either. I used on towel dried hair and also kept reapplying as I straightened with my flat iron and comb. My hair continued to curl and was a frizzy mess afterward. I also tried using the product simply with a blow dryer and paddle brush and had the same results.

Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum is a much better way to go. It works great and leaves my hair shiny, tame, and STRAIGHT!!

I really feel like I threw 19 dollars in the garbage!

Maybe this product would work well on someone who's hair is not as thick as mine but who knows.

If you have very thick hair that's curly or wavy I would definitely go with a different product!!

I've used this product for many years now. Because I was no longer able to locate Alterna Products where I am in New Jersey, someone suggested trying the Internet. It appears to be the same product, packaging is a little different and although the fragrance is slightly different, it works the same. Yes, love this product, you get the right amount of "hold" without stiffness. Hair is easy to blow-dry and style.
