Tropical King,
By Brent Evans (Rockhampton, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alternate Aloha (Audio CD)
When Elvis Presley rehearsed in front of an audience for the historic ALOHA FROM HAWAI'I the results were recorded, and in my opinion, were better than the event itself. This is Elvis without the pressure of millions of people watching him.He is still in front of a live audience,so he gives his all,but can afford to looser, jokey atmosphere. To all those who deride the Elvis of the seventies ;I challenge them to find a better backing band anywhere, and the king is in classic form.Listen to STEAMROLLER BLUES,SOMETHING,IT'S OVER and AMERICAN TRILOGY. Elvis Presley was in his element in the early '70s:this recording proves it.I'm not a big Elvis fan,but I love ALTERNATE ALOHA and I urge all to buy it.

Buy the new remastered version of the telecast CD instead. Sound quality is much better and elvis puts on a much better show.

I could listen to this cd over and over again this is one of his best live releases ever.Songs which are well crafted in this performance are "its over","my way","what now",and of course "american triology".If u are just borderline elvis fan or are not to fond of his later stuff, this cd will give u a whole new perspective and turn u into a hard core fan as myself.I highly recommed this to anyone ..

Better than Aloha from hawaii,
By Elvis fan till the end (michigan) - See all my reviews

Elvis the Alternate Aloha is much better than Elvis Aloha from hawii.Elvis's vocal control is much better than the aloha release.Elvis is in a great mood and ls more energetic than Aloha from hawaii.Basicilly Elvis is more relaxed, not as drugged up as the original.Elvis sings in a country tone in this album and stays on key. There is no slurring or off key moments on this album.I reccomend it.Also purches the dvd Im sure you will enjoy it more than Aloha from hawaii.

A more personal show than that of the televised live concert,
By Daniel Jolley "darkgenius" (Shelby, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Alternate Aloha (Audio CD)
Elvis' comeback concert in Hawaii in January 1973 was for many, many years the most watched special in television history. The Alternate Aloha provides listeners and fans with a recording of the live dress rehearsal for that performance on January 12, and being able to hear this unusual live show is something special. It may not be Elvis at his best, but it more than adequately proves that The Big E still had in the later stages of his career. The girls scream just as loud as those who would see the actual show the following night, nobody seems to care when Elvis forgets some of the words to Burning Love's chorus, and you are left knowing beyond the shadow of a doubt that Elvis had most certainly been there when you hear the announcement that Elvis has left the building. I think there is also a more personal nature to this recording than to his televised concert, particularly when he tells the audience about the upcoming live show and seems to seek some reinforcement from his fans to conquer a bit of nerves. Even though these are the same songs he performed in the televised concert, you just can't have too many versions of Elvis recordings of songs such as Something (a song George Harrison wrote and performed with the Beatles), the downright steamy Steamroller Blues, Frank Sinatra's signature song My Way, Hound Dog, American Trilogy, A Big Hunk O'Love, and Suspicious Minds (his last number one hit). Special treats come in the form of the Hank Williams classic I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (which Elvis calls the saddest song he had ever heard), Blue Suede Shoes, the absolutely smoking Fever, Welcome to My World, It's Over, and the show-stopping final climax song Can't Help Falling In Love. Along with this classic live dress rehearsal recording, you also get three recordings from late, late recording sessions: Blue Hawaii, Hawaiian Wedding Song, and KU-U-I-PO. There are significant amounts of down time, discussions about the tracks, and a little bit of fooling around in these three tracks, offering yet another revealing glimpse at the true Elvis Presley. Even if you own the actual televised concert, I think The Alternate Aloha is more than worthy of any Elvis fan's attention.

of all the cds i have of elvis- this is by far my favorite. it captures him live and at his most relaxed. this rehearsal for the aloha from hawaii, sparkles with the elvis electricity. the painting on the cover is also worth the price! i had it blown up and it looks terrific in my (shrine) living room! a must have!

This is the dress rehearsal for the Aloha From Hawaii television special. Some people prefer it to the "official" Aloha concert, but the concerts aren't actually all that different from each other. Elvis seems slightly more relaxed here, maybe too relaxed, he forgets some of the verses of "Burning Love" and "Steamroller Blues". The main difference is that this concert has two less songs than the other one. This CD includes three of the five special "insert" songs recorded for the American broadcast (the remastered Aloha From Hawaii CD includes all five of them). The "insert" songs include false starts and between song conversations, where the director gives Elvis instructions and Elvis expresses his annoyance at having to record these songs at 3:00 in the morning. This is a nice CD to have, but the remastered Aloha from Hawaii CD has better sound quality. Of course, "real" Elvis fans will want to have both concerts.
