I stumbled across Matthew Buchholz' art work a few years when I was looking for some Christmas cards that were different. I wanted something that reflected my personality and sense of uniqueness. People loved the cards; even people who weren’t very “nerdy” seemed to appreciate the uniqueness of the cards. I think Godzilla with a Santa hat was the favorite. What I really liked were all of the prints he made. In addition to being a closet geek I am history buff. In his prints I found a perfect marriage the two. I have 3 hanging in the bedroom (thank you dear).
I did pre-order the book but I wasn’t sure how much I would like it. I am a devoted Kindle follower now. All I can say is every time I opened it I found myself smiling. I didn’t expect all the commentary. I thought it would just be a collection of prints, which would have been fine, but I really enjoyed his narratives. It’s not a book you read cover to cover. In fact, I am not even finished. I am pacing myself and trying to enjoy just one page every couple of days because I am find myself dreading the day I run out of pages. I can’t help but chuckling a few times while writing this.
I just hope Matthew considers a second volume perhaps with some World War I and II photos.

Beautifully rendered full page illustrations of historical photos and prints..but .slightly different than what you learned about them...and a nice corresponding paragraph length explanation to each. Want the story of the Gettysburg Address featuring Villnar the Destroyer? Why 19th century England had a House of Clones containing numerous versions of Charles Stewart Parnell? Or how the Tower of Piza got its lean (quick answer: that rascally Bomarzo)? The full answers await you in this hilarious book.

The author has somehow amassed a collection of rare engravings, paintings and lithographs of little known historical events that have taken place since the age of antiquity and beyond. The book is worth getting for these rare glimpses of forgotten history alone. However as an added bonus the author has interjected delightfully humorous and educational documentation to support the rare imagery. Included is a priceless first draft of The Knights Tale by Geoffrey Chaucer as well as an original instructional poster depicting the Morse Code as it was originally submitted to the US Patent Office. So much hidden history packed into this nicely printed and illustrated volume. A must read to fill in those cavernous gaps of knowledge and our brains with the tasty goodness of good clean fun.

Buchholz has put together a book of his best prints and it is a wonder to behold. It is just the right mix of clever and silly, simple additions to old prints that implies some hilarious views on history. Can't recommend the book enough.

This book rocks my world! Such a fun, cool, and awesomely creative "history", with amazing illustrations and great details. Well written too, which when considering how great the illustrations are, is a complete bonus. Great for giving as gift as well!

Alternate... and insane. When history becomes hysterical. As a devotee of the late & great Ray Harryhausen, I found this immensely enjoyable. Some of the vignettes more miss than hit, but heck, the master of model animation was off his game at times, too. I'm l@@king forward to the sequel.

A very thought provoking book with some wonderful humor that has been created by Matthew. This is an intellectually humorous book. I enjoyed it. Matthew shows a very intelligent side with a shot of humor. I enjoyed it very much.
