5.0 out of 5 stars Modes of Being, March 8, 2009
This review is from: Alternate Realities (Mass Market Paperback)
The premise of alternate realities is that the everyday world we live in does not come about in the way we think. The common view is that we live in the world; we look out of our eyes at a world that is `out there' and real while the mind, the `in here' that is doing the thinking is not real. Modern physics has shown this idea to be wrong. Our mind does not view reality it constructs reality and many minds together construct the world. Without a mind there is no existence.

This is the book that put the idea of alternate realities on the map. Dr. LeShan is a psychologist who brings a psychologist's perspective and a scientists training to the question of what all this means. In a simple and clear style he leads you through the idea of the paradigm. A paradigm is a model or a map that we use to construct the world we live in. This book takes you thru the most common paradigms; which, although he gives them grander names, come out to be religion, science and magic. What makes this idea important is the realization that they are all right. There is no one right way to view reality. Moreover, each of these modes of being has its own possibilities, things it can do and things it cannot do. Once you realize this the number of choices you have in this life increases wonderfully. As a psychologist Dr. LeShan shows how this knowledge can be used to help each of us lead a happier fuller life. It can also be applied to the solution of questions that have resisted solution such as what is the paranormal or is there life after death. If human knowledge is to move forward this is an idea whose time has come and this is a book that should be read.
