Floored,
By The Raven "It Can't Rain All The Time" (Jersey Represent) - See all my reviews

The album itself is awesome, another great from Anathema. If you want to get technical thins is the album where they started changing their style into the band that they are today. I think that they have gotten better with each album, but there is something that makes this album shine. If you buy this album make sure you buy the Digi version with the BONUS tracks. I bought this album without even realizing that the tracks were Pink Floyd covers. I was listening and was just floored at how amazing they sound. I always attributed Anathema as a modern day Pink Floyd and finally hearing them cover my favorite band was just amazing.

The best of Anathema,

Anathema is one of the bands, which creates himselffrom album to album. After my opinion this album is their climax. They deserve to be in a position, which must be better than they are in. Feel and Fragile Dreams are songs to be memorized. Just go and buy this album. Otherwise you will miss a lot.

I feel so blue,

This album is soooo depressing, good Lord. If your feeling sad and want to stay that way then listen to this album because I cant see how it would cheer someone up.
That being said. Its a great album. Every song (except the second one) is great. The song Inner Silece is my song for my lost love Merideth S. Alt. 4 is what got me started on Anathema. And after that I've been hooked ever since. While this is not my favorite Anathema albume (A Fine Day to Exit is) it stands as a must for any fan and for anyone who needs a release instead of blowing out ones brains.

Firstly, I must share a weakness. I love music with a story. Whether that is a few songs tied together, or a fully fledged concept double album, I am always more susceptible to that album and it is more likely to end up as a favourite.
That is what happened when this album came out. I remember not knowing what to expect when this album came out, as their last two full length albums had showed quite significant difference in their music. This was definitely more art oriented than anything they had done before. Right from the start I was hooked. And that is rare. Normally my more favoured albums, over a long period of time, are those that took some time and, more importantly, effort, to get. Not so with Alternative 4. Right from the start I found this an album that I could listen to, from start to finish. The songs and moods ebb and flow and tell the story so very well. If I had to pick a top three tracks off the album, I would probably go for Fragile Dreams, Alternative 4, and Regret. But this by no means diminishes the other songs. I still feel that the production could have been slightly better, but this one of those albums, that for me, the music is that strong that the production would have to be a lot worse to take a star away from the rating.

1. Shroud of False 2/5
2. Fragile Dreams 5/5 3. Empty 3/5 4. Lost Control 3/5 5. Re-Connect 2/5 6. Inner Silence 3/5 7. Alternative 4 3/5 8. Regret 2/5 9. Feel 3/5 10. Destiny 3/5 TOTAL = 29/50 = 58% = 3 star album This is the first album i liked from Anathema, it has no "growling vocals" which is good, clean voice and he actually has a good voice and they are more successful now becasue of him singing clean. I like their moody style of music, its not something you can listen to everyday, its very specific. I guess if you are pumped and feel like exercise or whatever this is not the cd you want to be listening to. It can be a bit depressing, but it has nice melodies and the songs are really well done. I like most of the songs on the album and i would recommend it if you are a fan of pink floyd or soft dark moody rock.

Floydian influence pays off,
By NEOPROG RAN (EL PASO TX) - See all my reviews

I really like this band. They create excellent atmospheric rock songs just like Pink Floyd. And they pay tribute to their major influence by lifting passages from the Floyd (on this one they steal the melody from Astronomy Domine and on A Natural Disaster they steal bits from Animals). To me, that's ok because they are paying homage to the masters of this genre. Anathema continue where Floyd left off and they do a fine job of it. Sadly, Rick Wright passed away almost ensuring the Floyd will never get back together again. Anathema is a band to check out if you miss the glory days of Floyd. I'm not saying this band is totally copying. I think they have fused their own sound based on a sum of their influences.

Mood metal struggles against mediocrity and often succeeds thanks to the emotional override but there is still nothing much that sticks out beyond a certain level of competence and a few eerily channeled Floyd covers. Petal mettle |
