Introduction: This book is about job search basics and contact information. It attempts to marry military skills and clearances to the civilian job world. It is not another book on resume writing, interviewing or job hunting skills. While the book will not guarantee you a job it will surely get you started on the right foot. Remember, we are special people who have held special jobs. With this book you should be able to continue pursuing a career you really love.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mr. Merritt was born on July 28th 1958 in Massena, New York and adopted by Dr. Paul E. and Shirley C. Merritt. He attended elementary school in Potsdam, New York where his father was Professor of Chemistry at State University New York, Potsdam. He attended High School at Potsdam Central High School from 1972 - 1976 graduating with a New York State Reagents diploma. During this time he was New York State Section 10 wrestling champion, earned a Brown Belt in Korean Tae Kwon Do, two Presidential Sports Awards and played soccer, track, ran cross-country and earned Life rating in the Boy Scouts. During this time he also developed a fondness for mountain climbing, history and military affairs. Upon graduating High School (1976) he attended college at State University New York (SUNY) Delhi where he wrestled varsity NJCAA Division IV, SUNY Oneonta wrestling NCAA Division III and St. Lawrence University earning AS, BA and MA degree's respectively. He also held the office of President, Delta Theta Gamma Fraternity for which he now holds a lifetime position as Grand Councilman. In college he continued Tae Kwon Do study earning a First Degree Black Belt in his spare time. During summers he worked as a counselor, performed volunteer work for the local Elks club and taught Tae Kwon Do. In 1985 he enlisted in the United States Navy serving onboard Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71, USS John Young DD-973 and SEAL Team Six. During this time he became a marathon runner, tri-athlete and earned Presidential Sports Awards for running, swimming, biking and Tae Kwon Do (2). In 1990 he ended his active duty Navy service and started a Navy Reserve career taking a job with an intelligence community consulting firm. In 1991 he was promoted to Intelligence Specialist (IS) First Class in the Navy Reserves, earned a Second Degree Black Belt and moved to Heidelberg, Germany. In 1991 he founded Merritt Industries whose developments led to 13 copyrights, a software product line and reviews in Black Belt and Martial Arts Training Magazines. In 1995 Mark returned to the United States and accepted a position with TRW in Reston, Virginia. Over the next six years he was Reserve Intelligence Area 19 (RIA-19) Sailor of the Year (FY98), RIA-19 Chief Petty Officer of the Year (FY 00), accepted a Naval Officers Commission (FY-01), published "Alternative Careers in Secret Operations", help found the Professional Connections in the Intelligence Community (PCIC) Symposium series and worked at the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA) and Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). In October 2001 Mark accepted a position with General Dynamics and there served as a threat assessment team lead for securing New York City's water supply in support of the national Post 9/11 Homeland Defense effort. In 2004 he volunteered to serve in Afghanistan where he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his actions. In the fall of 2007 he published "Alternative Careers in Special Operations" and "The Complete Book of Tae Kwon Do Poomse". In 2008 he was inducted into the Potsdam High School Athlete Hall of Fame and in 2009 the Cambridge Who's Who. Over his career Mark has travelled extensively throughout the world to include Canada, Mexico, Argentina, El Salvador, England, Germany, France, Czech, China, Austria, Lichtenstein, South Africa, Bahamas, Slovenia, Italy, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Belgium, Kenya, Panama, Turkey, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Korea and the UAE. He is a member of the National Military Intelligence Association, Naval Intelligence Professionals, the Association for Intelligence Officers, the Association of the United States Navy and the Fraternal Order of UDT/SEAL. Mark enjoys paragliding, mountain climbing, scuba diving, martial arts, photography, aviation and military history. He has run 8 marathons, is a highly decorated Naval Officer and upon retirement plans to teach college courses on the history of the Cold War and the Intelligence Community. Mr. Merritt lives in Reston, Virginia.
