Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Although there is some worthwhile information here, this new title from the publisher of Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide (LJ 6/1/94) would definitely not be a public library's first choice for a book on alternative cancer therapies. Some of the information could be useful to health practitioners counseling patients using alternative remedies or to patients with cancer who have some knowledge of how to evaluate such remedies. But the book's clear political agenda limits its usefulness in most libraries. The preface sets the tone by implying that many doctors reject alternative medicine because they will have to "go back to school to catch up." Although there are some scientific references, many of the claims made are not documented. The chapter "How Cancer Politics Have Kept You in the Dark Regarding Successful Alternatives" is particularly hostile, stating that "the result is that chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are the law of the land as cancer treatments?for political, not therapeutic reasons." Occasionally, a recommendation has some credibility, and the authors give a good synopsis of studies on the herb Essiac, suggesting that it be "combin[ed]...with other anticancer agents and other cancer-fighting modalities." One hopes that most readers will realize that these recommendations should be discussed with a mainstream physician. Better choices on alternative cancer therapies include Ross Pelton's Alternative in Cancer Therapy (LJ 6/1/94) and Michael Lerner's Choices in Healing: Integrating the Best of Conventional and Complementary Approaches to Cancer (LJ 6/1/94).?Natalie Kupferberg, Ferris State Univ. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wide Collection of Alternative Medicine for Cancer by M.D.s, July 19, 1999
By emass@masscomm.com (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
I have had cancer and was fortunate enough to have my right kidney removed by surgery without the need for any chemotherapy or radiation. By the time I had any symptom, I had a tumor half the size of the kidney. Conventional medicine is excellent for surgery, emergency and trauma. But it is sorely lacking, and sometimes harmful, for treating illness and disease. Conventional doctors only know 3 treatments for cancer: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. The latter two treatments destroy the immune system while attempting to destroy the cancer. This book gave me a totally new perspective. Instead of the conventional medical model of attacking the symptoms and trying to remove individual cancer cells, it seems the proper thinking about cancer is that you need to build your own immune system to fight it. It is a disease that will return unless you build your body's immune system to control it! Destroying the immune system while destroying the cancer will not work. It is one's own immune system that will fight the cancer to give one a future. With this book and its extensive content, I have developed a 3 point plan: 1) Prevention - build my immune system, this book gives me ideas to develop a plan; 2) Diagnostics - this book shows there are a multitude of diagnostic methods that conventional doctors don't even use, some of which will detect cancer up to 19 months before conventional diagnostics (X-ray, CAT scan) will, many are very simple and relatively inexpensive ($100-$200) - why aren't these used???; 3) Treatments - with this book, I have studied and prepared myself with the knowledge ahead of time of what I would investigate and use for alternative treatments should my cancer return.

5.0 out of 5 stars How you can understand cancer and prevent or reverse it, February 21, 2001
By David G. Anderson (Williamstown, ON, CANADA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This massive (1116 pages) book is published by the editor of the magazine 'Alternative Medicine.' The first section consists of richly detailed accounts of the successful cancer treatment plans of 23 respected alternative physicians from Robert C Atkins to Charles B Simone. Part 2 is a fundamental explanation of the nature, causes, politics and prevention of cancer. I have never read a better 225 pages on the subject. When you come closer to understanding the conditions that precede cancer you are empowered to change those conditions and assume control over your own body. The final section presents alternative therapies one by one from nutrition, botanicals, and metabolic factors to physical and energy support therapies ranging from ozone and thermal (infrared heat) to acupunture and magnetic. In all, a finely-written explanation of a life-and-death topic meant for those who have cancer, their friends and families who refuse to give up and, who knows?, maybe even your doctor! This is a book I run to every time an acquaintance is diagnosed. I learn about the specifics of their condition and the hope that exists beyond the conventional.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read book for all Cancer Patients., January 10, 1999
By A Customer
This book, writtin in easily understood layman's language lays out the alternative treatments of more than 20 doctors. This information proved to be a life saver for me when my lymphoma recurred following chemotherapy. This book gave me the information I needed to get the treatment to solve my problem rather than diddle with the symptoms. The bottom line message is "YOU DONT HAVE TO DIE FROM CANCER"
