Amazon.com Review

It's a stretch to imagine a book entitled Alternative Medicine for Dummies--the subject is immeasurably vast (thousands of years of Eastern medicine, for example, is just one part of it) and new research is updating our knowledge daily. How can a clever For Dummies book skim the surface and yield anything worthwhile? The answer: by teaching readers to evaluate alternative treatments and practitioners, and take charge of educating themselves to make informed decisions. The book is organized into these sections:
  1. "What Everyone Needs to Know": Using alternatives safely, recognizing bogus claims, the importance of scientific evidence, and an overview of major alternative practices
  2. "Complementing Your Medicine": Getting good alternative care, working with your doctor, shopping in health-food stores
  3. "The Systematic Approach": Some philosophies of alternative healing: Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, naturopathy, and homeopathy
  4. "Hands-On Approaches": Chiropractic, osteopathy, acupuncture, and massage
  5. "Mind-Body Medicine": Relaxation techniques, including meditation, yoga, hypnosis, and biofeedback
  6. "Herbs and Other Natural Approaches": Using herbal remedies safely and effectively, benefits of specific herbs, herbs to avoid, aromatherapy, nutrition, and supplements
  7. "Specific Conditions": Ailments and their best-bet alternative approaches.
This book packs a ton of information and advice into 348 clearly and entertainingly written pages. It's a terrific introduction to this immense field. --Joan Price

From Library Journal

This no-nonsense guide to unconventional medicine, by the head of Oxford Health Plan's Alternative Medicine Program and a medical writer, provides a little bit of everything on the subject. Although the prevailing spirit of the book conveys "fun and ease," there is an emphasis on safety, with the scientific literature referenced throughout the text. Loaded with tables, charts, helpful icons, and cartoons, this will appeal to many readers. (LJ 3/15/99)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but it can be misleading., January 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alternative Medicine for Dummies (Paperback)
As a Naturopathic student, I enjoyed the book, but some of the information regarding Naturopathy is possibly misleading. Many countries only have Colleges of Natural Medicine or Naturopathy, where the only qualification is a diploma. People reading the definition of Naturopaths might be unjustly influenced to believe only a degree is valid. Potential patients should always verify that the practitioner is registered with the appropriate Government bodies and that the institute where the practitioner studied is also registered. Many diploma courses require a minimum of 500 hours of practical internship that degree courses do not. On the whole a good reference book for anyone interested in the alternatives to allopathic medicine.

2.0 out of 5 stars Keep in mind, not a "how to" book, February 17, 2001
By
This review is from: Alternative Medicine for Dummies (Paperback)
I would like to point out to my fellow readers that this book is not a "how to" book. If you think that this book will teach you how to use alternative medicine to heal, think again. This is a reference book, pure and simple. For example, in the chapter dedicated to massage, one might have expected to learn how to give someone a massage. But, instead, you are given everything else but that information. You get a short history of massage, some of the benefits, and places to go for more information. If you think that this book will teach you how to use the methods described in the table of contents, think again. This is a reference book, like a dictionary. You get definitions, history, and references for more informatoin, but you do not get a how to lesson. If you want to be able to look up data on a new age healing method you heard about on the news, then buy this book. But, if you are looking for a book that tells you how to use those methods, keep looking for another book.
