5.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge the book on it's cover.. July 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A few days ago, I was prowling one of the Free Books threads on the Kindle customer discussions forum and ran across someone that had posted a link to this book - and mentioned it was science fiction. So I clicked on the link. I'm always looking for another book to add to my pile of TBR books on my Kindle. But lately I've started getting a lot more discriminating with regards to what I throw on that pile. With most of the free books that get posted to the customer discussions forum, it's like looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack. It's been my experience that I've found mostly hay.

After clicking on the link, my first impression was made looking at the cover of this book - and I have to say it wasn't a good one. I almost took a pass on getting it. But reading the description made me at least click on the cover and pop open the `Look inside' page so that I could skim the text and see what sort of quality it was. I just intended to read a bit here or there, but ended up reading the first dozen or so pages. That alone made me go get the whole book, and to spend the next two days reading it - instead of just adding it to the bottom of my pile.

The story is well written and it's apparent that the author has spent the time to eliminate any errors. Set in the year 2084, in a very utopian society - the story is an action adventure tale of someone that comes to learn what cost there is for a society like that. About a week or so before I found this book, I had watched a news story about Ray Kurzweil's idea of `The Singularity' and how to live longer. It wasn't till I had read about 1/3 of this book that I happened to find the acknowledgments page at the beginning of the book and see that the author had been inspired in part by Kurzweil's work.

This was very well done. Well developed plot and characters. I was impressed that this was his first book and I look forward to the next. Great technology tie-ins that really got me interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first effort. July 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Alternet" is an excellent all around novel concerning the manner in which power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It happens to be set in a futuristic world after the "Great War" and abounds with techno-geek wonders, but, at its core is a moving universal tale of humanity's struggle for self determination.

This is a very well written and inventive work with deep character development, innovative application of technology and an engaging style of prose. The only flaws I could find were the infrequent transposition of homonyms such as "heals" for "heels," "shear" for "sheer" and the use of "parameter" instead of "perimeter." It's almost as if the author wrote this piece on a smartphone with auto-correct turned on. That being said, the vast majority of the work generally avoids the primary pitfall of most self-published e-books; the obvious lack of editing.

In my opinion, anyone will enjoy reading "Alternet" and look forward to more work from this author. If you happen to be a sci-fi fan, so much the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story - Highly Recommended August 19, 2012

An excellent first novel. I was hooked after the first few pages. The story started out strong enough to make it difficult to put down and it turned into a one sit read (fortunately it was a Saturday night). The story is well thought out and the plot is strong and well connected. The development of the characters as the story progressed was well executed for both the protagonists and the antagonists. I will look for more from Mr. O'Doherty going forward as I expect that he will get even better with each book he writes.

More About the Author

Bryan C. O'Doherty was born in Portland, Oregon in 1977. He currently lives in rural Japan. He is a father to three, a husband to one, a sometimes salaryman, a farmer, a teacher, a caretaker of an old Japanese farm house, an Anarchist, a hippy, a home-brewer, a singularitarian, an MMO gamer, an agorist, a capitalist, sometimes even a philosopher. Regardless of what you might think, none of the above is necessarily contradictory!

And of course he loves to write.

He's written only one book, but he is already at work on the next one. He loves speculative fiction of all kinds, but his favorite stories are about the power of love, friendship and loyalty to conquer great odds.
