Product Description

Alto Professional ZMX52 5-Channel 2-Bus Mixer with Zephyr Mic Preamps.

From the Manufacturer

Alto Professional
Heavyweight Features, Bantamweight Size

Amazingly versatile, the ZMX52 is the most compact member of the Alto Professional Zephyr mixer family. Balanced inputs, a discrete ultra-low-noise mic preamp, and a high headroom design all add up to uncompromised clarity in hundreds of situations. The unique complement of inputs and outputs helps ensure you'll always meet the client's needs and get the job done. At home in a budding multimedia production studio, on stage with the solo performer, or as the front end for a recorded music system, The ZMX52 is the perfect compact take-anywhere professional mixer.

Welcome, 1 and All

Channel 1 offers both an XLR input (with phantom power) plus a balanced 1/4" input to accommodate any microphone—dynamic, condenser, or wireless. The discrete Zephyr preamp ensures clean sound and quiet operation. Gain control and level knobs allow proper gain staging. Channel 1 on the ZMX52 is also ideal for any critical mono audio source. High and Low EQ controls allow you to shape the sound to fit the mix or the venue.

Moving in Stereo

Next up in the ZMX52 are two stereo-paired channels—2/3 and 4/5. These paired channels are well suited for keyboards, workstations, drum machines, and other stereo sources. Each paired channel offers a stereo balance control, and a level knob. The Stereo Aux in jacks use RCA connectors to directly interface with AV equipment, DJ gear, and consumer audio products. This Aux signal can be sent only to the headphone mix for monitoring, or sent to the main outputs.

Going Out In Style

There are actually three sets of stereo outputs available on the ZMX52—Main, Headphone, and Aux. The 1/4" main outputs are controlled by the Main Level control, a large and comfortable low-profile knob, augmented by dual four-segment LED bar graph meters. The headphone output is a stereo 1/4" jack and features a dedicated level control. There is also a pair of RCA Aux outputs, useful for making the connection to any kind of recording system, video gear, a DJ rig, or other audio components.

I've been drumming for 12 years, and have been using several mixers for the duration of my time for click and playback purposes. This little unit will provide exactly what you need when it comes to live performance and rehearsal. The best selling point about the ZMX52 is the power adapter, it's a regular 18v ac adapter which can be easily replaced at any Fry's or Radioshack etc. the Behringer units that require a 3-pin power supply that easily malfunctions, can be damaged when plugging in the dark, and is a hassle to replace. The cheapest I've seen Behringer's power supply online was 39.99 w/ shipping, which is ridiculous because the Xynex 502 is the same price. If you need a small mixer for whatever reason, buy this. It's been amazing to me.

...only wish that the headphones had a completely separate volume/channel, so you could cut out the speakers and use the headphones alone.

Excellent quality product at a good price. The noise level is extremely low. I can record one mono mic and two stereo line in sources. Or you can connect 5 individual mics. Only the XLR port has 18 volt phantom power.

I am staying away from USB based mixers because the USB cable tends to cause a hum in the mixer and their Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) quality is very limited. I output from the line level out to the line-in on my motherboard and the noise level is very low. I can also record at 96 or 192 KHz and 24 bit which gives me more headroom for editing and supersampling down to 48 KHz 16 bit. It's important to note that you should not use the mic-in because the mic preamp in PCs tent to be very noisy.

Negatives:
The Phantom power is only 18 volts which isn't enough to drive many condenser microphones. You need to look at the voltage requirements of the condenser mic in the manual to see if it works with this mixer or not or you'll need an external 48V phantom power supply.

You can't monitor both the AUX in and Microphone at the same time without sending both signals to the main output or AUX output. I wanted to be able to monitor a background track along with my own voice but only send the mic audio to the main & AUX output. You can monitor the AUX in and send just mic to the output but you can't hear yourself. The only solution I can see to this is to buy a second mixer, but there's nothing else worth buying in the $50 price range other than another Alto ZMX52. While this makes me a bit angry, it also reminds me that the ZMX52 is still the best value in town.

Very well made and excellent price. It is the perfect device for my needs: mixing microphone, computer out, MP3 player, and drum machine to powered monitor speakers. Not sure why they call it a 5-channel mixer. It physically has 5 inputs plus a stereo AUX in (total 6) but 2 of the 5 are right channel stereo inputs so you really can only mix 4 devices (3 plus AUX); unless you split a stereo input to 2 devices? The AUX input is also a bit confusing although very configurable. You can route it to MIX, phones out, or MAIN out with two confusing buttons. That lets you route just the AUX channel to headphone for play along monitoring while still having all the channels mixed. AUX out is always MAIN out; great for recording but there is no separate level control.

I bought this one to replace another brand that developed a bad "scratchiness" in the audio pot. As soon as I hooked this one up it did the same thing! I was tempted to send it back but I decided to give it a few weeks to wear in. That seemed to work because it works fine w/o any of the scratchiness that usually plagues audio controls.

Was looking for an item just like this, worked as advertised. Perfect for what I needed. I use it to mix a MP3 player and Electric Drum Set through headphones.
