The National Kidney Foundation's END THE WAIT! initiative on solving the nation's donor shortage was launched at the same time the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) announced it has published a new book that makes the case for financially compensating kidney donors. The NKF effort contains no recommendation that such a trial should be conducted.
Edited by Sally Satel, MD, a resident scholar at the AEI and a live donor kidney recipient, the book When Altruism Isn't Enough - The Case for Compensating Kidney Donors, makes the case for implementing a government regulated system in which prospective donors are offered economic incentives to donate a kidney.
