Altus 24" foam roller,

An excellent foam roller. I've worked it hard for a month now, and it hasn't deformed at all. But it's not rigid; it's soft enough to use on my tender IT bands. I like the unusual 24" length, which eats up less storage space than a full-length roller but ably handles the same functions. All but one, that is: it's not long enough to support the length of your spine and your head simultaneously.

Lost Shape in Two Weeks,
By John (Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 24 Inch Foam Roller (Sports)
I was impressed by all the positive reviews and decided to give this a shot in an effort to stretch and stay fit at home. I couldn't believe that after only a few uses the roller lost its shape and now is lumpy, bent, and completely unusable. I'm 6'0 tall and weigh 165 so it's not as though I put it to above average use. It's so bent of out of shape that it can't even stand on its end without tipping over.
Purchase at your own risk.

I've used foam rollers in the gym and they worked really well for me on relieving muscle aches specially on my quads, hamstring and calves. I got this for home use and I have been using it even for stretching while watching tv. I have used hand held massagers and heat pads for my legs just to relieve soreness but stretching with foam rollers worked out the best for me. I am happy with this purchase. This specific product is quite good too. It is not as expensive and has a good quality density foam.

So far it has lasted 3 months and it doesn't look any different than when I first got it. I use it daily for soft tissue work.

Just received this roller three days ago. It has already completely lost its shape and is basically useless! Save your money and buy a dense (black) roller (like I just had to do). I bought this to roll my IT bands and the thing now looks like a deformed hour glass. I have to try to "uniformly deform" this thing (left, right, middle) each time I try to use it. I only weigh 152 lbs. and as I said, I only used it for the ITB. Again, buy a dense roller(i.e. black one).

It's only OK -- spend more for a better quality roller,

I was really excited when I first got this foam roller because it seemed like it would be really durable. Unfortunately, after only about a month of occasional use, it has already lost its round shape. It's not totally flat, but it's not round enough to roll on effectively. I can still use it to work on trigger points in a static position, but it is frustrating that it didn't last longer. I do think the blue ones are more durable than the white rollers, but not as good as the black ones.
There is a black foam roller at the gym that really holds up well, so I think I'll ditch this blue one and pay a few more bucks to get an extra-firm black foam roller. I used to have problems with shin splints and sore hips from running, but the foam rollers really are effective. For my shins, I just roll my tibialis (shin) muscles after running, and it gets rid of soreness very well. So, this was good enough to give me an introduction to foam rollers to let me know they are effective for deep tissue massage, but not durable enough to last. At least I could get used to using it in the privacy of my own home instead of feeling silly trying to figure it out at the gym. Also, when i order a new one, I will get the 36 inch like they have at the gym, because you can lay your whole spine down on it lengthwise at that length to work out kinds in your erector spinae muscles.

EXCELLENT PRODUCT - Very Sturdy! I wish I had known about this years ago. I have trochanteric bursitis which basically means severe pain in both hips & thighs! I've suffered for many years and have taken many medications and injections which sometime help but only for a short time. While watching Dr Oz one day he mentioned this Foam Roller for bursitis pain. I researched the item on the internet and purchased it that evening. I decided on the 24" size. For something so very simple it delivers great pain relief. I found the exercises on the internet and they are very simple movements once you get the hang of it! BE PATIENT...it can be very painful to exercise your sore, tender areas but believe me it is well worth the effort. I perforn these exercises whenever I have a minute or two to spare and it only takes 60 seconds per spot. Of course when I started I could only bare to do 3-5 seconds because of the pain. After only a month I'm happy to report I can "MOVE" about without pain. Yes, I still have my flare ups but I no longer take any pain meds. If you are unsure about this item I would suggest talking to a Physical Therapist or someone that does deep tissue message. I've ordered many things from Amazon but this is by far the best money I've spent! I LOVE MY FOAM ROLLER! It is VERY Sturdy and the 24" size makes it easy to keep out of sight when not in use. When the roller first arrived I was very skeptical but now I'm a believer!!

I chose this one because of its smaller size and color. I don't have much space and didn't want a huge white noodle hanging around my apartment. The white rollers are a bit softer than this one but I wanted it a bit harder so that it would last longer. Also, if you get a white one and roll around your floor it will start to look grungy pretty quickly. So for those reasons I recommend this roller. When you you lay on it face up (with the roller perpendicular on your spine) and roll up and down the spine you can hear and feel the bones gently snap back into place. I love this roller!

The foam is firm and is the perfect size,

I just started training for a marathon and found that I've got a bunch of really tight muscles. A foam roller was the recommended way for me to safely stretch those muscles in a way that I can't do using normal stretching on my own.
Unlike some foam rollers that I've tried, this foam roller is firm enough to handle my weight without getting compressed out of shape, but also gives just enough to conform to the muscle area that I'm working on. Even my 4-year old likes using it! The only downside is that the Altus Athletic web site has only a few descriptions of exercises/stretches using the roller (nothing was included with the roller itself). But I've found so many other places (videos on youtube, etc.) that this is hardly worth mentioning. |
