My old computer had two IDE (PATA) hard drives. I bought a new computer that only had a SATA interface, and wanted to use one of my old IDE drives for backup. So I purchased this item, advertised as an "IDE/SATA hard drive enclosure," assuming it could be used with both IDE and SATA hard drives.

When it arrived, the box had a red bullet next to the word "SATA," suggesting that this was supposed to distinguish it from a similar box marked "IDE," and neither "IDE" nor "PATA" was mentioned anywhere on the box. Thinking there had been a mistake, I e-mailed Computer Geeks asking if the product would, in fact, work with an IDE drive, asking for a refund if it wouldn't. I didn't open the box, so that Computer Geeks would have no problem reselling the product as new if I had to return it.

Computer Geeks' response did not answer my question, but gave me a return authorization number and stated that my shipping costs would not be refunded. I objected that their response indicated that the product would not work with an IDE drive, contrary to their description on Amazon; if I had to pay for shipping both ways, I would lose half of what I paid because of their mistake. I asked that "Cassandra F" have her supervisor review the matter and respond. "Cassandra F" sent me another form letter, saying sorry, that was their policy.

Well, guess what. I opened the package, the enclosure had the proper connectors for an IDE drive, I attached an IDE drive, and it worked fine. It's a small purchase, but with customer service like this I'll think twice before I make a larger one.

I used this for a while as an enclosure but I think it overheated and fried the harddrive. I've since used the USB part of it a few times when I needed to hook up a harddrive, so it's handy to keep around for that.

its not the fanciest item, but it does its intended purpose just fine, if you were in need of a fancier item, you would not be in this price range
