2.0 out of 5 stars "Encryption" feature is a gimmick, January 5, 2009
This review is from: Aluratek Tornado 250GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive w/ Key Recognition Security (Electronics)
The enclosure is pretty good quality aluminum with plastic end caps, and it comes with a slim carrying case. That's about as far as the "good" goes with this item. The "encryption" feature is a complete gimmick. It only does a simple XOR of the data on the drive using a key that resides insecurely on the RFID fob. So basically, the data is only protected against the casual thief who may simply try plugging it in and giving up when it does not work.

Because the encryption doesn't give you any real protection, it just ends up being an inconvenience.

And with the drive I got, the included USB cable seemed to be flaky. The drive would only sometimes spin up when connected to a computer. Replacing the cable with another mini USB cable solved the problem.

Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
