Book Description

September 1, 2001

No one knew who was the father of Carin's baby. She'd kept her secret for the entire pregnancy. But during the birth, she called out a name--Raphael Alvares!

The powerful Brazilian millionaire rushed to Carin's bedside. But had Rafe come because pride forced him to give the baby his name? Or was it because the one passionate night they'd shared had left him longing to make Carin his bride?

More About the Author

I live in New England now but I was born in New York City and lived in or near the city most of my life. It's where I met my husband--I was fifteen and a senior in high school! He was at both my high school and college graduations. We have a lot of shared, wonderful history.

After we married, I taught elementary school for a while. Then I settled into being a wife and mother but the desire to write was always there. I'd written short stories when I was little--the first, which I illustrated myself, I wrote when I was seven! I never really stopped writing and one day I looked in the mirror and said, "Okay, Sandra, you've always wanted to be a published writer. Maybe it's time you did something about it."

I'd always been interested in the complex ways in which men and women relate to each so it seemed natural to start writing romance fiction. I wrote short stories and sold several of them. Finally, I took a deep breath, sat down and wrote my very first novel. To my amazement and joy, Harlequin Presents bought it.

I also really wanted to like this book, it was readable, but I really didn't care for or empathize with either the H or the h.

Both Rafe and Carin behaved badly. He expects her to comply with his every demand and basically acts like a brute. She acted immaturely and deliberately provokes him, then acts like the wronged party.

At a time when Carin, a new mother, would be taking comfort in her much wanted/loved baby the child, Amy, isn't mentioned for a large chunk of the book.

It was hard to believe that they loved each other and that their love would last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance Junkie, October 23, 2009

This book was awesome, I started reading it around midnight and that was a huge mistake because I couldn't put it down. Raphael "Rafe" to his friends was the perfect alpha male, handsome, rich, rags to riches kind of guy. The best part was Carin because she was the sexy, good looking, tough talking New Yorker...actually she could have been from anywhere in the USA. She was not the lame, weepy, no back bone women that most authors' like to write about. She was every one of us and I LOVED her character. Rafe being Brazilian and Carin from the USA was Latin macho way vs tough USA female...They were perfect together and it had a wonderful ending. I recommend this book highly and I will save it on my kindle forever and will read it again in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Baron saga continues...., August 30, 2001
This review is from: Alvares Bride (The Barons) (Harlequin Presents, No. 2202) (Paperback)
This was a great book. Carin and Rafe were great characters, and I loved hearing about Amanda and Nick too. It was a rocky start for Carin and Rafe, but they made it through. Though the book was her sort of usual "girl hates guy, guy hates girl, they fall in love, then get mad at each other" type of book, I still enjoyed it.
