Product Description

Alvarez Artist Series, ABT60 Baritone Acoustic Features: ABT60 Baritone Acoustic Solid A+ Grade Sitka Top / Gloss Mahogany Back & Sides / Semi GlossFST2M, Forward Shifted, Scalloped Abalone & Mother of Pearl Inlays Mahogany Neck, Semi Gloss w/12th Fret -Level Rosewood Bridge Real Bone Nut & Saddle Rosewood Synthetic Bone Bridge Pins Rosewood Headstock Plate Ivory ABS Binding Premium Die-cast EXP's Tuned from B to B, the ABT60 is pitched between a dreadnought and acoustic bass to give you deep tones with easy playability. Chord shapes and scales are the same as a standard six string but the voicing is lower. This is one of Alvarez's best selling models and within five minutes of owning one you'll see why, great guitar to play. The term "solid top" of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. Artist Series is built to do exactly this. Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments. These components include our FST2M bracing system, bi-level bridge, real bone nut and great quality tone woods. The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

From the Manufacturer

The Award Winning Artist Series

Artist Series is now “The Award Winning Artist Series” – winning competitions and receiving rave reviews in the States, Europe and around the world. It’s a truly designed line of guitars that stands tall and sounds sweet in the solid top guitar market.

Hand selected solid tops; forward shifted scalloped bracing, awesome tone and player experience….

Advanced Bracing System

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments. These components include our FST2M bracing system, bi-level bridge, real bone nut and great quality tone woods.

FSTM is a forward shifted X brace design. Both the X braces and asymmetric tone bars are scalloped. Moving the system forward allows for a larger soundboard, which is optimized with a solid maple bridge plate for both strength and energy.

Quality Construction

The solid ‘A’ grade Sitka spruce and cedar tops are hand selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. Our tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive. Dig in and they shout right back at you, treat them gently and they whisper and respond instantly to the lightest strum or pick.

Vast Range of Models

New Artist Series guitars look stunning and come in a huge variety of shapes, colors and wood choices from standard OM and Dreadnought models to more specialist instruments such as Baritone and Parlor. Each shape is also available in a left-handed version.

Acoustic electrics come with the SYS550 designed by B-BAND, a pro level EQ and pick up that reproduces the sound of the guitar very closely with great clarity. B-BAND use a patented under saddle electret film pick up which eliminates synthetic or processed sounds often heard with Piezo or other styles of pickup. The result is a very true, acoustic sound. SYS550 also has an accurate, backlit chromatic digital tuner.

I am a church musician with 35 years' experience, and also own a Martin D-35 and Martin D-16GT guitars. I recommend this guitar enthusiastically and without reservation.
First, here were my worries about this guitar, despite seeing some great videos on youtube (especially the Back to the Future theme cover by Acoustic Labs).

1. Strings would be too bulky to play comfortably - not so. Comes with coated D'Darrio strings, very easy to chord. Elixir now makes a set you buy here on Amazon. Elixir Strings Nanoweb 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Baritone Strings (.016-.070) They are more vibrant than the D'Darrios.

2. strings would rattle, being too slack - not so; tension is good, and string buzz usually comes from a dehydrated guitar whose top has sunk; remember these have a solid top and it will respond quickly to the air around it for up to five years until it settles. When it arrived here in Florida, from NJ, the top was clearly a bit dry, and in only a few hours (my house is normally at proper humidity for guitar) it rose noticeably and there is zero buzz without even having to adjust the rod. Get a soundhole humidifier and a hygrometer (from radio shack) if you want to keep the top healthy.

3. Capo would be inadequate - no prob, I use the Hamilton Fret Spanner, a wide capo that holds the strings down in two places, and all strings ring true; not so with several other capos, I found the B string is muted with a standard capo.

4. Frets would be too far apart for my fingers given the wider neck scale on the baritone. Not so. I have medium/small hands and have no problem reaching chords.

This is the best guitar for someone that wants a lower louder sound from their acoustic. Strumming this beast will unlock the very hellgates of sound that Cthulu has wanted to keep to himself on his demon tone phonograph. The 6th string is .70 inch thick, and is the size of a bass string. The guitar is tuned to BFDAEB and the chord structure is the same as a regular dreadnought. The super jumbo size would definitely be unique in your collection. This is the first new guitar I have ever owned and I'm ecstatic with the purchase and quality of the instrument. Summon the dark with the vibrations only this guitar can create.

This guitar looks, sounds, and plays at a level far above what you'd expect for this price. Hasn't left my side since it arrived. If you're looking to expand your sound to include the unique qualities of a baritone acoustic, this is a great (affordable) way to start.

Note: Although the guitar sounds just fine by itself, I've found that adding a Planet Waves O-Port only increases the balance of tone, resulting in a sound that really turns heads.
