The Cons: It doesn't fit large pencils (Dixon Tri-Conderoga). The case isn't meant to hold shavings. In fact the shavings are extruded on top of the blades, making it a little difficult to see the sharpening process without clearing them away. It retains them long enough to finish and tap them out into the wastebasket. The case feels sturdy, but I have to be careful not to put too much torque on the lid when I open it, as it feels as though it could break with too much pressure. I'm pretty careful with things, so I think it will be fine. And it lives in a drawer, not a backpack.
Overall, I think they packed a lot of function into a small, good quality cased for the price. I love that I can replace the blades. I'm so sick of throwing things away because one part of it needs replacing. I posted a picture of a pencil I sharpened with it in the images above. I would recommend this to people who appreciate good engineering and/or who want a long, very sharp pencil lead.Read more ›
The only negative is that I wish it could hold more shavings. Sharpening a pencil once can fill up the holding compartment completely, making it hard to see how the sharpening is coming along.
***Edit: Dropped this from 5 stars to 3 stars because when I went to change the blades, the plastic threads stripped out. My husband was able to fix it for me by grinding the blade so the screw would reach the lower threads, but the plastic is a bad design.
Oh, and the plastic cover has broken off.
First, shape the WOOD with the lower sharpener labeled as 1.
Secondly, shape the LEAD with the upper sharpener labeled as 2.
(See product picture I uploaded which includes a pencil sharpened by me for the FIRST TIME.)
There are small red and white holes on the sides of the sharpener: these are for keeping the sharp point sharp. Use step 1 and 2, then when pencil dulls to a round tip, use the red or white holes to sharpen just the tip.
This product states it was made in Germany. I have found nothing but the best of quality in this sharpener.
