I am learning to draw using graphite and this is the sharpener I have settled on after using and throwing away half a dozen others. The cheap school sharpeners that produce short, stubby points are useless for drawing pencils. The Kum produces the long taper and sharp point necessary for both broad strokes and fine detailing. It has two sharpening holes. The left one makes a long taper in the wood and leaves a blunt lead stopped at exactly the right length. The second one sharpens the lead to a fine point and makes the lead flush with the wood. After a few practice runs, I was able to produce perfect points every time. The sharpener comes with 2 extra blades, which I haven't used yet because it's easy enough to hone the existing cutters on a stone when necessary. The Kum also has two holes in the side to sharpen 2mm and 3.15mm leads from clutch pencils. I like this sharpener so much I bought a second one. By the way, I haven't found a sharpener that works on soft charcoal drawing pencils. I still end up using a single edge razor blade for these.

The Pros: This is a great sharpener for a great price. It works in three stages. The first takes the wood down. The wood came off in long smooth ribbons. The second stage shapes the lead to a pin point. The third stage is a tiny hole (two sizes) referred to as lead pointers. I don't feel any resistance when I use it, so I don't quite understand the purpose. After stage two, the pencil is needle sharp -- so sharp that it's actually too fragile for writing right away. I can see that it might be more appropriate for an artist. I also used it on a standard pencil, a Tri-Conderoga and a colored pencil and it worked well on all. You do need a light touch with the second stage, or you could break the lead. There are replacement blades included in the case, and you can order even more from "pencilthings" online.

The Cons: It doesn't fit large pencils (Dixon Tri-Conderoga). The case isn't meant to hold shavings. In fact the shavings are extruded on top of the blades, making it a little difficult to see the sharpening process without clearing them away. It retains them long enough to finish and tap them out into the wastebasket. The case feels sturdy, but I have to be careful not to put too much torque on the lid when I open it, as it feels as though it could break with too much pressure. I'm pretty careful with things, so I think it will be fine. And it lives in a drawer, not a backpack.

Overall, I think they packed a lot of function into a small, good quality cased for the price. I love that I can replace the blades. I'm so sick of throwing things away because one part of it needs replacing. I posted a picture of a pencil I sharpened with it in the images above. I would recommend this to people who appreciate good engineering and/or who want a long, very sharp pencil lead.

Great pencil sharpener. With the two step sharpening you never have to worry about almost being sharp and then breaking the lead off and having to start over. Also it has a place to sharpen the larger diameter mechanical pencil leads and it comes with extra blades for the sharpener.

The only negative is that I wish it could hold more shavings. Sharpening a pencil once can fill up the holding compartment completely, making it hard to see how the sharpening is coming along.

I've been looking for a good sharpener for a while. I homeschool my kids and draw with graphite and colored pencils, so that means lots of sharpening, and I really can't stand the noise of electric sharpeners. I liked my Staedtler tub sharpener for a little while, but the blades aren't replaceable, and it never worked very well with my Prismacolor pencils. In fact, I gave up and started using my pocketknife to sharpen them. As soon as the Kum arrived, I sharpened about a dozen of my colored pencils and only broke one lead (mainly because my 4 year old distracted me). Yay, no more ugly chopped-up looking pencils! And no more worries that I will cut my clumsy self with my pocketknife. I also sharpened a couple of graphite pencils and tried out the lead pointer. All sharpened beautifully. It does need to be emptied frequently, but since I was already accustomed to sharpening over the trash can, that doesn't bother me. So far, so good. If it disappoints, I will update this review.

***Edit: Dropped this from 5 stars to 3 stars because when I went to change the blades, the plastic threads stripped out. My husband was able to fix it for me by grinding the blade so the screw would reach the lower threads, but the plastic is a bad design.

Oh, and the plastic cover has broken off.

The Kum Long Point Pencil Sharpener with Pointer will be my only chosen pencil sharpener from this day and forward. I was so impressed with the easy of a two step sharpening process.

First, shape the WOOD with the lower sharpener labeled as 1.
Secondly, shape the LEAD with the upper sharpener labeled as 2.

(See product picture I uploaded which includes a pencil sharpened by me for the FIRST TIME.)

There are small red and white holes on the sides of the sharpener: these are for keeping the sharp point sharp. Use step 1 and 2, then when pencil dulls to a round tip, use the red or white holes to sharpen just the tip.

This product states it was made in Germany. I have found nothing but the best of quality in this sharpener.
Wow!
