Book Description

0521671434 978-0521671439 June 18, 2007
Few thinkers have had as much impact on contemporary philosophy as has Alvin Plantinga. The work of this quintessential analytic philosopher has in many respects set the tone for the debate in the fields of modal metaphysics and epistemology and he is arguably the most important philosopher of religion of our time. In this volume, a distinguished team of today's leading philosophers address the central aspects of Plantinga's philosophy - his views on natural theology; his responses to the problem of evil; his contributions to the field of modal metaphysics; the controversial evolutionary argument against naturalism; his model of epistemic warrant and his view of epistemic defeat; and his recent work on mind-body dualism. Also included is an appendix containing Plantinga's often referred to, but previously unpublished, lecture notes entitled 'Two Dozen (or so) Theistic Arguments', with a substantial preface to the appendix written by Plantinga specifically for this volume.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...not only do these essays provide a helpful introduction to Plantinga's work, but they also advance the ongoing discussion of Plantinga's many, varied, and important philosophical contributions in interesting and helpful ways. The collection is impressive in both its scope and its quality. It is probably the best single book about Alvin Plantinga produced to date."
-Scott A. Davidson, Morehead State University, International Journal for Philosophy of Religion

5.0 out of 5 stars A Plantinga Review, March 3, 2008
One can really deepen their understanding of Plantinga's principles by reading what other comptemporary philosophers have to say about his work.
I believe Plantinga has broken a lot of new ground, and it is fascinating to see how other leaders in the field are digesting his work. This work also contains Plantinga's notes on his speech regarding "A Dozen or So Arguments for God."
My highest recommendation. As a non-trained neophyte in the world of philosophy, I found this book very rewarding in putting some context to Plantinga's work. I would not recommend reading this review, however, without first reading Plantinga himself. In particular, I would recommend "Warranted Christian Belief" and "God and Other Minds."
A number of his essays are also online.
