Another update, August 25, 2012:
I still have nothing but great things to say about this mat...I did notice the price has gone up on it, but I would expect that as nothing stays the same price year to year...I have had no problems butting the 2 mats together to make for one large cutting surface. I did put some of the rubberized shelf lining one can purchase from the dollar store under them as an added "help" in making sure they don't slide around while I am cutting...the 1st board I bought is almost 2 years old, and I must say the surface of it is still in great shape! I would consider myself pretty heavy duty into quilting...I use the mat probably every couple of days, and when I use it, I use it...So, summing up, I still highly recommend this mat. I also say even with the price increase, it is a bargain if you compare the cost of an Olfa mat to it...

Update: June 14, 2011- I just ordered a 2nd mat, not because the 1st one is worn out, but because the price is too good to pass up, and I can put them together to have a really big cutting area. The 1st mat I ordered does have some areas where it is obvious that I cut at that measurement often, but it has had no impact on how the mat works. I also compared this mat with Fiskars and Olfa brand mats, and this mat is much thicker, more pliable, and has not remotely warped on me. I use this mat a lot with my quilting, it is a great size, and so far has held up wonderfully! The price is much better than other brands, same size mat surface. Having the black side as well as the green also comes in handy. I just received my 2nd mat, and it is just as good as the 1st one, and most importantly has no chemical odor! Highly recommend this mat!

I've had my Alvin cutting mat for years and it really does what it says. Don't be fooled by cheap imitations. Just because another brand is green doesn't mean it's self healing. Alvin mats really do heal when you cut them. They remain smooth afterwards. I have 3 mats from 3 different companies, and only 2 of them self heal. Alvin is one of them. After all these years, my Alvin is stained but still smooth and not warped in any way. The price shown here is excellent. Alvin is the way to go!

When setting up my sewing room and cutting table, I wanted a larger mat than you can usually find. None of the stores sold self-healing mats in sizes larger than 24x36. I wanted 36x48, and I wanted it to be self-healing. I sew apparel as well as make quilts, and I wanted a mat that was large enough to allow me to cut out patterns with my rotary cutter, not just cut pieces for quiltmaking. After much searching I found the Alvin brand online and took a chance by ordering it.

I am extremely happy with the quality and performance my mat. It is a little heavier and thicker than the other brands I've seen -- Olfa, Fiskars, and Dritz/Omnigrid, but that is all to the good. I highly recommend this mat to anyone who is looking for a good mat, and especially to those who want one that is larger than the standard.

This is a good size for me right now, it fits on the table just so. I just started using it and I'm not pressing very hard, but I know I'm cutting through the fabric and I can't even see the mark on the mat. I really like the rotary cutter/mat combination. Much easier than scissors for most pattern cutting. I think this mat seems sturdy enough. You do want a firm surface underneath it because the mat is a little bendy, so you need a table or a board - not carpet.

I bought the 30 x 42 size because it was the right size to cover my cutting table. It arrived folded over in a cardboard box and I was afraid it would be permanently warped, but within a few hours of unpacking it was completely flat. I've had the mat for about 6 months and here are a few observations:
As I hoped when ordering, the mat fits my cutting table perfectly. I can cut with impunity and not worry about damaging the wood finish of the table.
After months of use (about 10 quilts and a few garments), it has held up well so far. Cuts heal instantly and completely and it still looks brand new.
The mat is resilient - not too soft or hard. This makes it easy to cut without applying a lot of pressure, and helps keep the rotary blade sharper longer.
The only drawback I've found so far is that the grid lines on the mat do not line up with my Omnigrid cutting rulers. I can use the lines to make sure the fabric is squared, but have to use the ruler's lines to get an accurate cut. The mat's grid lines are closer together than the cutting ruler, resulting in a discrepancy of about 1/4 inch per yard. (Hmmm, my local quilt shop uses these mats to measure and cut. Am I getting shorted?)
On the whole, a good mat, especially if you need it in a bigger size.

I am very pleased with this product. I had never heard of Alvin, so I didn't know what to expect. I previously had an Olfa mat that was smaller. This mat is thick and heavy and fits perfectly on my kitchen table. Also, it doesn't have an unpleasant smell like some of the other cutting mats out there. The mat is small enough so it doesn't take up too much room but large enough that it can handle most clothing and medium-sized home decorating projects. The price is right for this high-quality product.
